I'm pretty sure I've seen pictures of BMW straight sixes in tourers before now.

Personally I've had a 1.6l Caterham engine in the back of a Clio and two 1.6l Caterham engines in a BMW tourer

A 2.3 turbo engine and gearbox (still bolted together as a single unit) from a Saab 9000 including turbo, all pipework and ancillaries, along with the the tools to remove it and the engine crane to lift it.
This all went into the back of another 9000.

Winner!

I'm about to move an Essex V6 in a Micra and I thought I'd win.

Hat doffed!
I had to remove the boot lid to make the opening large enough to get it in, and then replace it once the engine was in, but it was only a couple of screws so it wasn't hard smile

I once carried a Triumph 2500 engine and gearbox in the back of a Herald estate, it was very heavy. The engine eventually went into the front of the Herald, it was very quick (for a Herald estate).

Not an engine , but the heaviest load I carried in the back of my Volvo 240 was an AGA stove, about 400 Kilos.

I have always used a trailer for engine transport.

The crate LS7 V8 for my Ultima first.

Topped it with 4 x 27 litre V12 Meteor engines about 18 months ago.
They weigh 650kgs each but some included a crate so nearer 950kgs each.

A slow and very careful journey behind my great Discovery III for 80 miles.

Definately! I thought an Alfa v6 in a Mitsubishi Colt was in with a shout, but a 2cv wins for sure smile

Hoping to carry a ZR 1.4 in a ZR. Both the engine and car weigh hardly anything in comparison to other similarly sized cars, the engine is the lightest naturally aspirated engine you can/ could get. Correct me if I'm wrong. But yeah, gona be fun smile

I once opened a boot on an E39 tourer to find a spare diesel engine in the boot.

I also moved an M3 engine about in the back of my E36 coupe.
Throughload with folding seats or literally just in the boot? redface

Would love to see a picture, infact this thread needs more pictures! but has so far delivered more than I ever expected! biggrin

I can't quite bet the 2cv, but I have transported a 2.8 cologe v6 in the back of my (then current car) k10 micra!
And I'm pretty sure the back of it was on the bump stops. Needless to say, the journey home with it behind me was slow and steady laugh

I've moved a Kent engine in a wheelbarrow at a race once - at the same time a Cobra team did the same with a helicopter...

As an aside, I also once moved an entire drum kit and owner in a TR7 - now that was tight...

Do you win by nature of what you carry the engine in or by quantity though? 3 x Clio Williams 2 litre engines in the back of an E39 Touring:

A sort of friend/slash guy how regular buys parts from me picked up a mk1 1.6 engine with gearbox complete engine and the car it went into a alfa mito. 4 people picked it up and with the back seat down and the passenger seat all the way forward it just about fitted length wise, also height wise just about fitted to.

Ive also had a mx5 engine inside a mx5 with the passenger seat out also a mx5 door too.

I would strongly recommend tying it down somehow. Otherwise if you were to have an accident, even a relatively minor one, you'd end up with an engine embedded in the back of your head.
Very very sensible advice. If you stop suddenly in an accident, the engine won't. It will be coming through the cabin at whatever speed you were doing pre crash.
