RE: Shed Of The Week: Skoda Octavia vRS
Discussion
What a bargain.
I had a 52 plate one and had it re-mapped. It was quick enough and I had great fun with it, especially in the Alps.
Handling wasn't really that good, the steering was slow and the ride was hard. It was very stable at high speed though.
225 tyres were cheaper than the OEM (205? or 215?) size.
Good cars.

Great shed
"Strong performance".......but never as strong as the original Autocar road test
Yes, one of the best trolls of recent times, delivering the road test car to autocar with a TT spec 225bhp engine in it. I wonder if the Skoda management knew, or it was just someone taking a bit of initiative... I suppose it did represent the kind of performance that was easily achievable if you had a simple map put on it."Strong performance".......but never as strong as the original Autocar road test

I couldn't ever refer to a car I was selling as 'he' or 'she' without feeling a bit of a div.
Couldn't agree more, and despite always having a soft spot for these cars that would put me off ever responding to the ad. "She" might just about be bearable if the car in question was suitably classic and graceful. This ad just sounds weird.I'm not as enamoured with this as I once would have been - though they are good cars. Anyone wanting a shed with tuning potential, four seats and decent but not stellar handling would be better off with this though:

Easy 275bhp with a cheap chip, more reliable and more comfortable.

Tyres are expensive? Since when?
Uniroyal RainSport 3 in 225/45 17' size are £65, plus around £10 for fitting each. I'd call that cheap.
Consumables are cheap too.
I've had 3 in the past, and my only complaint of any note was that there was no 6th gear, when the equivalent Golf or Leon had a 6sp 'box.
There are a few on Briskoda that have changed the white/cream carpet to an anthracite coloured one from a different spec Octavia. Likewise, seats are often changed for Golf GTi trimmed ones.
A stage1 remap makes the car drive like it probably should have done in the first place, at roughly 210bhp, but I'm happy for them to be cheaper than the equivalent Golf or Leon, and therefore slightly less prominent to buyers in the market for this sort of vehicle.

I bought a new one in black in 2001, basically off the back of the Autocar test ("a BMW 330 wouldn't see which way it went"!) and was very happy with it as my first 'quick' car. I took it to Scotland from Kent after a week and had a great time running it in!After a couple of years I got tired of the colour and chopped it in for a new silver one which I had remapped by Jabba Sport to around 230 bhp which seemed perfect for the chassis unless it was very slippery out. The only problem I had with either of them was one coil pack in 2001, replaced under warranty. Great car for shed money.

Mine currently has 205s on it, decent ones are just over the £100 mark. I guess because I don't feel any love for the thing I just resent spending money on it.Uniroyal RainSport 3 in 225/45 17' size are £65, plus around £10 for fitting each. I'd call that cheap.

All your comments otherwise are justified, I think because it doesn't excite me I just cant get excited about it. They are certainly not bad cars however! And I would recommend one. Just given the choice I would always take my MX5!
Silly question perhaps but would a remap mean my original clutch and gearbox (and turbo) are more likely to go kaboom?
Simon
Got pulled over by the police estate version of this when I was 17 and had been driving all of three months and given three points. My first thought (well after "Oh st, I wonder how long they've been following me!") was that white cloth seats was obviously a bad choice for the back seats of a police car.
Why have I always assumed that these were 4WD
Anyway, these are dirt cheap now and seem a bit of a bargain. Wheelbase always looks a little odd, I guess that is due to coming from a Golf Mk4 platform?
Considered a couple of estate versions for my winter shed, ended up buying an Impreza instead. Probably the right decision

You can get a Octavia 1.8T 4x4 but it's the 150hp engine same as the Golf GTI rather than the 180hp VRS version. That said nothing stopping you putting a KKK K04 or Garret onto the 150 and having a bit of an animal. One of the local VAG tuners by me used to run a Octavia 4x4 estate with circa 500hp now that was fun!!!!
