No, but it was definitely more like the E30 M3 than recent (much larger/heavier) M3's.
Yes, but the car in question is this M2 and whilst I agree it's highly unlikely to be as driver orientated as the 1M let alone the E30 M3, we don't actually know that yet. I'd love to see a CSL type version of this thing but even that would probably still be 1400kg and have EPAS and electronic everything.

I'd even more like to see BMW actually have a go at building a proper sports car again but I don't think I can see that happening either. Sadly, the market has come to realise that you can't make much money aiming cars at driving enthusiasts.

The mk1 Z4 whilst floored, was way more focussed than the new one. What I'd like to see is a limited run Z4M, ditching the folding hardtop for a fixed roof to save weight, LSD from the M3/4, decent brakes and sorted suspension with pilot super sports. A manual option would be great too...

Seeing as the E46 CSL was 1400kg and the 2 series is the same size I'd say without the bespoke weight saving measures that cost a lot to develop for the CSL, the M2 will be heavier

Generally M cars are getting on for the heaviest in the range ( within a model ) - big wheels, brakes, tyres, diff etc

I do like the sound of this. Keep the weight below 1400kg. A proper LSD, around 350hp, old school steering and flared arches and I might have to rethink the Cayman idea. Price will be the key to its success, it needs to be not much more then 40k.

I'll be amazed if it's below the weight of an E46 CSL ....unless there's no aircon, entertainment ( radio etc ) back seats, carbon fibre panels, racing buckets etc

It'll be interesting to see if it even ends up lighter than the M4. I think the standard 235i is heavier than the M4?

M235i was the same weight almost as an E46 M3 - as they're same size it's not hard to see why

Indeed and the M4 is, I think, lighter than either? So the question is how much weight they can cut from the 2-series platform without pushing the price too close to the M4.

Not quite - though it depends on the individual car and the test

Is it just me? The 4 exhausts is beginning to annoy me now, mind you even run of the mill cars are getting two pipes now.

Sales & residual values of 1M suggest otherwise to me.
All residuals are a balance of demand and supply. With the 1M the supply is significantly limited (400 odd cars) so a relatively smaller demand still keeps the price high. Add in to that how well regarded it is as an enthusiasts car (which is a small group of people, but who are more willing to pay a relatively high price for what they want) and you end up with solid residuals (similar situation in Porsche GT cars).

The problem is this strategy is a pretty poor one for a new mainstream model. Sure, you could limit supply significantly to keep your order books full, but that's not a great way to make a lot of money. It of course works to create a halo car, but that's not the way BMW have ever seemed to use the M division.

There were around 800 M4s registered in Q2 and Q3 alone last year, so I would think they are planning to sell a LOT more M2s than they did 1M Coupes.

On this then...yes

On this then...no

I must admit I still like the look of 4 exhausts on cars though and agree with you that even run of the mill stuff get two pipes now.

I think this (and most other M cars) would look much better with 2 less tailpipes; the quads look OTT but not in a good way. Twin ovals (as in the Audi RS6) look so much more stylish.

Can't Wait for this car.

From the article:
The long awaited and enthusiast oriented BMW M2 has been spotted testing again, this time near the Leipzig plant in Germany.
