Bet it will sound amazing too. cloud9
Sounds better than 90% of 5 door hatchbacks on them market smile

I prefer tHe sound of electric over diesel any day, and if no sound means simple reliable 700bhp on tap then I can live with that!

The thing I liked about the Tesla was that it does seem like a new thing, engineered in its own right. The guys from the company that I met make no reference to petrol cars, as they are not relevant to what they are doing with their technology and what they are going out to achieve.

The packaging of the car reflects an electric only car (so they can get a different look and 7 seats). They don't apologise with fake engine noise, as even modern petrol 'sports cars' do.

Very impressive indeed. No Lambo, of course!

Do they still follow you around in case your battery goes flat? Nice service.
That and of course the obligatory fire crew to put the flames out.

Only when it floods. That's when they auto combust.

Edited to add:
My mistake. It was 16 Fisker Karmas that auto-combusted when exposed to rising floodwater. http://updates.jalopnik.com/post/34669789863/more-...

Had a couple of rides in a Tesla on a recent work trip to Amsterdam.
I was very impressed at the rate it took off, although he said he loved it as a car but as a taxi he preferred his diesel E class estate as he could work longer hours.

Amazing to think that these things are in their infancy.

I was in the Tesla dealership in Westfield (White City) yesterday. They have a bare chassis/running gear there, so you can see some of the innards.

The eMachine at the back is frikking *huge* compared to the McLaren one, like 10x the volume.

That does look nice! What is the range these days on something like this between charges?

Depends. Are you running the heater or aircon? How fast are you driving? Are you doing constant speed or stop/start? Are you driving up and down hills?

Usable is somewhere in the region of 250 miles, in the real world.

That doesnt sound too bad considering. I expect a hoon session would reduce that by quite a lot..

This is because it is a "low speed" AC motor, rather than the "high speed" SPM in the P1.

(AC motor advantages = high temp, high thermal inertia, no expensive rare earth magnets so cheaper to make. Disadvantages = poor specific power output(so it's big for any given output), high iron losses and difficult to cool rotor), low overall efficiency)

Deeply disappointing video. frown I was expecting their tits to pop out from the acceleration, or something.

Anyway, here is an interesting one. Aventador vs Tesla. Tesla has the legs on it up to around 60ish mph.

Sorry. Boobies only pop out during braking !!!

Nice video! Incredible that a 4 door saloon (hatchback i think) can outrun an Aventador, temporarily.

I does confuse me because the 700bhp the Tesla has doesn't seem to show when you get past 100mph. I watched a few vids of Teslas mainly the p85+ and the latest P85D monster serious cars from 0-100 but a soon as you start reaching 100 or past 100 the tables completely turn (despite having 700bhp).

It turns out that with it being 1 gear the electric motor RPMs are limited to prevent damage and therefore power starts to reduce before reaching the programmed limiter of 125mph. Another thing is in some environments if the ambient temp is high and/or you have done a lot of hard runs the electric motor gets hot and also throttles power so cooling can reduce the temps.

The Tesla is independently clocked at 3.1 sec 0-60 which is very impressive as its hard to ever meet 0-60 times in less than perfect conditions. Rumours are saying that the latest software update will make this do 0-60 2.8 seconds! You can see from the youtube timing that the Aventador took 7.5sec to get back to neck and neck. I suspect this was around 90mph.

Even still i think what they have achieved between 0-80mph and possible 0-110mph is incredible. Only issue for me is the lack of noise and drama. Mine you if it pulls 1G at launch perhaps temporary deafness makes this point mute.

The current limiter is 155mph, there was a firmware upgrade.

Pedants mode:
Actually most magazines find it quite easy to match the claimed 0-60, as they typically allow a couple of feet before they even start timing.
Anyway if I was a millionaire I'd roll around in one. The Tesla I mean. biggrin
