My other half is finally taking her lessons. She is taking an auto only test to make passing easier (less stress etc)

Anyways, looking for some good suggestions.

Requirements:

Cheap to buy (sub 5k but cheaper the better)
Cheap to insure
Auto only
Reliability a plus!

So far, we are thinking of minis, aygos, polos. Anything we are missing here that would be more interesting?

Cheers!

Most new small cars are bought with manual. Very few small autos get made, so either prepare for a long hard search for whatever you can get your hands on or else get the wife to spend a few more lessons and have a proper licence.

Some small cars have crap auto boxes. Narrow it down by the box not the car.
Once narrowed down motability auctions might be worth a try

Quite a few autos get made but their market is different. Their market is the 60+ group, who change their cars less often

I'd agree. Should be plenty of choice on a nice Golf GT to suit your requirements smile

How about a Suzuki Swift auto? We've just bought a 55 plate one with 33k miles and it's great. My wife passed her manual test but gets on much better now in an auto. You can pick them up fairly cheap quite easily.

Citroën C2 VTR SensoDrive. They are paddle shift - semi auto. Not sure if that qualifies but, they are pretty cheap to buy right now! A decent one can be had for around £1500.

Thanks for all the replies!

She is not keen on a jazz!

She likes polos but for some reason insurance quotes are working out quite high on these...

Might be worthwhile looking at pcp on a vw up - but I've read the auto box on those is awful!

Try the Ibiza/Fabia/A1, they're all built on the same platform as the Polo, but may well have different insurance quotes.

EDIT: Okay, maybe not an A1, autos start at ~£9k, judging by what's currently for sale on AT.

Have a look at the renault zoe thread in the ev forum. My wife's had one for a few weeks now and absolutely loves it.

If you fit the driver profile ie <50mile daily round trip, then I'd recommend one. Our monthly costs for running the brand new zoe vs a ten year old diesel citroen c5 weren't that far apart. Factor in higher depreciation on a 5k 2nd hand car and it'll be even closer.

My wife has a full licence but gets on much better with an auto, I hate being a passenger when she's driving the other car as I can't get on with how she abuses the clutch and gearbox. Not intentional, just no interest in how things like that work and why gear selection should be a function of engine/Road speed rather than time elapsed, she never stops going up and down the box!

Hi Trowelhead, my wife drives a 5 door Peugeot 107 and she loves it. It has been so reliable and even I,an mx5 owner, love driving it. It's nippy and cheap to run, insure and tax. It's not an automatic but there is one for sale in Bradford at JCT 600 at £5995. Hope this info is useful to you. Grumpsy. P.s. The size of the boot is the only real problem......size is important after all.

Some great ideas, hadn't thought of the fabia/Ibiza...

The A1 she would love but would be over budget and I don't think there is an auto?

Now the renault zoe is an interesting idea I'd personally love to have a go in one, will show her it now...

There is, well it's a DSG, you can get one which has the same 1.4 twin-charger and DSG combination as the Polo GTi, Fabia VRS and Ibiza Cupra. However, I'm not sure if there are any more sedate versions which are also autos.

How is there 'less stress' in taking an auto only test? The test is the same with the exception of changing gear which never seems to be something struggle with anyway.

The 1.2tsi 105 dsg in the fabia, ibiza, polo is a cracking engine. Great combination of running costs and performance relatively speaking.

Budget may be a problem though. A cursory look on AT shows sub-5k fabias on cat d only, but there are some 2011 cars under 6k with quite high mileage (~50k).

Do it! I've driven in to work in it today and it is just so relaxing for the daily grind. It's proving to be quite good in the snow/slush too.
