No doubt everyone knows this, but time for an evening rant.

Road tax expires end of Feb. Wife doesn't drive, and I am off out of UK next week to work overseas, thought I would re tax the car before I go.

Knowing how wonderful computers are, it was no surprise that the DVLC web site knew my tax expired end of Feb. so far so good.

When I tried to renew the road tax, it said it would renew it from 1st January. Which means I would have paid two months TWICE.

This is surely an easy fix for DVLC programmer, good old rip off Britain.

Knowing a little about complex govt systems - the programming "fix" will not be simple. And the process around it, even less so.

Your probably right, so basic design flaw allowing you to tax a car which is already taxed.

Partly. It's probably another new system talking to an older system talking to an even older system all trying to deal with a labyrinthine set of regulations from laws that are set with good intentions but unintended impacts.

If it doesn't expire until the end of February, I'm hardly surprised that you can't tax it before the end of January.

Exactly. For as long as I can remember, you haven't been able to tax a car until a certain number of days before it is due / until the reminder arrives.
