what are the least worst SUV options?

Eurgh. GF is adamant she want some kind of SUV thing to replace current car, and dreams of an Evoque, which fills me with horror - as does the thought of a mong faced Quashkai (although I know the current model gets good reviews). I drove a Renault Kaptur at Christmas as a rental which she seemed to love, but it was the most revoltingly underpowered pile of junk I have ever experienced (with the eco mode turned on the accelerator basically just stops working). What are the least worst options I should consider? Open to second hand, doesn't have to be new. Not open to piles of expensive blinged out cack that go horribly wrong after 30,000 miles.
If it's going to be her car and she's paying for it, let her choose. Let her pay. Keep out of it.bhstewie said:

Tut don't be silly. She'll be far happier rattling around in a 20 year old Mistubishi Pajero than a nice shiny Evoque (I know that isn't quite what the OP is suggesting).
I have a similar set of conversations with my missus (who, to be fair does need something with some ground clearance due to horses and stuff). Easily the best advice I can give is to let her make her own mistakes.

My father bought a Yeti 18 months ago and is not a fan.
Hard ride which makes my mother feel ill when in the passenger seat, no spare wheel unless you take the option of reducing boot space to fit one, problems with faulty brake discs which Skoda and the local dealer were entirely disinterested in resolving.
I quite like it for some of the reasons stated above - punchy performance for a diesel, not at all bad handling, but my father wished he had never sold his Mk2 CRV.
Get a long test drive before committing to the Skoda would be my advice as it might not suit everyone.
I really wanted a Yeti. One of the features which attracted was the ability to remove the rear seats and turn it into a van type space, albeit no flat floor but that wasn't an imperative. Having had a Skoda since 2002 which has needed very little in all that time other than servicing and consumables* you'd think the Yeti would be a shoe in.
The above mentioned really really fidgety ride was one reason, the other major thing was the shape of the boot with the rear seats in place. Ok in volume but very small in plan view. Every time I head out with more than the minimum don't want to be playing a game of Jenga.
Evoque, didn't like it, but then the one I drove which was fully loaded including the trick suspension punted very rapidly down my handy test road, known locally as the Switchback.
No experience of the others but as mentioned if a clear preference has been declared, even on the flimsiest of evidence, grief beckons for not listening to She Who Must Be Obeyed.

Sit your lovely wife in a lovely car.
Evoque it is.
Qashqai, Captur & Co are chastity belts on wheels
exactly. I know car image is subjective etc and someone will be along to flame me. But Evoque screams "I'm Jordan, or an Essex drug dealer" and the others just scream "I have given up on life and am content to be a dullard". *awaits torrent of abuse* Evoque it is.

No idea on your budget or specific requirements other than "SUV". As an alternative, what about the Inifniti FX? This thread covers it in fairly good detail. Quite a smart looking bit of kit.
Mrs PB has made it clear that I am not to get rid of her Forester, ever. Unless its to get a newer one. Seriously, it seems to be just the right car for her, and in 8 years has had nothing major go wrong, which is astounding considering the urban assault it survives each day. A new XT, with the new 2.0T engine could be fun...
I have also mentioned that when the kids get too big for the current cars, I'll probably get an XC90 with the V8 engine - just like the juxtaposition of a fusty-looking Volvo with a screaming V8 under the bonnet. And, no, I don't usually consider mpg.
Not sure if any of that helps - how about an Evoque...???
