Sorry to all those forum members who hate these threads but I'm undecided.

Short story - I need to get rid of my 156 sometime this year. It's starting to suffer from the dreaded rust issues and due it's current condition it's not really worth throwing a few grand at it for the sake of things - it's only a 2.0 TS.

Anyway I need something for the family and also something a little fun. It's going to be hard going from an Alfa but I'm really picky.

My general rules are:

- Not too fussed on mpg as only do £6k per year
- Insurance isn't really a problem
- Prefer £285 tax band
- Don't like diesels - most the trips I do are short
- Don't like auto's - however I could probably live with a tiptronic box
- Not a massive fan of BMW's and Audi's (too common around here)
- VAG group seem a bit boring and don't look that great until the most recent models
- Not a massive fan of 4x4's/MPV's
- Needs to have more than 150bhp
- Can carry a dog in the back if possible (however not high on my priority list)
- Annual service bills usually under 4 figures
- No imports for insurance reasons

My selection so far:

Alfa 156 GTA - Will need to be modded with a F430 T/B and aftermarket exhaust. Put off with potential rust and running costs.

BMW M5 - Not keen on the looks put having a V8 engine putting out around 400bhp tempts me.

Focus ST170 MK1 - Another good contender but I don't like Ford clutches as they feel really light and flimsy - can these be upgraded?

Lexus IS200 - Good contender. Potential gearbox issues reported with some owners raises an eyebrow.

Mazda 3MPS/Mazda 6 MPS. High up on the list. Tax bracket a little high on the 3 MPS. Not many 6MPS's for sale.

Porsche 911 Carrera - too small, got moaned at for suggesting this. Taken 3 did not persuade the GF either!

Porsche Cayenne - Fits the bill but a little large. Definitely on the list but worried about the bore score issues on the 4.5s so got the slower 3.2 in mind.

Subaru Impreza WRX - Very low MPG when you drive it hard, high insurance costs and the turbo put me off. Mainly as it will be used for short journeys. Likely to get stolen.

Cars I'm put off by:

Renault's - If it was anything it would need to be a 5 door Megane RS 225 but all the Renaults I have owned usually need something doing to it every few months as something either wears out or breaks.

Saab's - Good specs but look a bit plain and boring.
Volvo's - See above

Somebody hellllppp!!!!

Cheers

I had exactly this problem. Legacy Spec B was the perfect answer IMO (2005/6 for low tax) as long as you can truly accept the MPG - 20 around town, 30 on a run. Awesome car.

hmmbthey look quite nice for the money. They look a little plain from the outside but the 4wd 3.0 n/a is winning me over smile
