I've got an 03 1.8 TDDI Transit Connect for work. Very Leggy but still a decent van. I try to look after it mechanically as my work depends on it.
A few days ago I've noticed that when I'm driving on part throttle it's as if I'm modulating the throttle when I'm not. A sort of running out of fuel sensation. It starts First time everytime, does mid 40's MPG, uses no oil.
It was taking a while to warm up so I've replaced the Thermostat yesterday.

I can't think of how to describe it to google it. It's not really 'hunting' and it can't 'miss fire'. It's a diesel.

Any ideas?

When was the last time it had an oil and filter change? My similarly leggy Kangoo was doing something similar - oil change helped tremendously (it was like tar) as did avoiding Morrisons diesel (other supermarkets fine)

Oil and Filter 2k miles ago. Usually gets BP or Gulf fuel in because they're closest. Also had Fuel filter and Air filter less than a year ago!

Could be the lift pump on the way out? Or a blockage in the fuel filter.

Happened to my mates leon, very similar fault description as you have given. We changed the filter and it improved things, but it came back again soon.

When he told me he had accidentally put 10-12l of unleaded in his TDi 6 months prior, we changed the pump and it's been grand since. biggrin

A diesel can 'misfire' as such if the injector is faulty.

Ok this is interesting. Just been for another look and one of the braided hoses off the injectors is hissing and all brittle and cracked. Are these return pipes? Cut half an inch off the end of the pipe and shoved it back on. I remember one of these being split on my 325 TDS and it was allowing air into the system on startup.

Fingers crossed it's cured it! Will report back later.

Cheers.

And here comes the supermarket fuel BS again rolleyes

On cruise (part throttle) the EGR will be "in use" if the bleed off pipe fix doen't cure the issue i would try an EGR clean next amd or a check pf the boost hose especialy at the I/C as the bellow section can crack after a while due to all the movement.

Have you tried Italian tune up ? Seriously, most vans never get a long journey - give it a try - 45 minutes each way at 80 mph in 4th gear on motorway, lots of full throttle. I'll bet it runs better afterwards.

It gets a blast on the Motorway at least once a month. In fact I have a 100 mile round trip to do on the morning so I'll give it some. Not convinced it's that though...

So I've been for a run out this aft and it seems a little better but the problem is still there. Interesting that EGR has been suggested. I actually blanked it off about 10k ago with some 2mm Aluminium plate. I'm wondering if it's burnt through. Will investigate this week.

My wifes Fiesta TDCi used to do the same. It used to do it on the same part of the motorway everytime. A very slight down hill where you only tickle the throttle, and the revs used to vary by 100rpm or so. Her car was brand new tho. I always just put it down to a 'bug' in the ecu programming. It was fine in every other part of the throttle range.

I run a fleet of Transit connected have this problem a few times.

The fix was to replace the fuel filter.

Ford do not change this in every service schedule but I came across this on a 14 plate just after its first service.
