Im selling a car at the moment and trying to get my head around the new rules.

Specifically what happens if I fill in the V5 and send it off on 31st Jan. is the refund processed according to the signed date on the V5, or by when the DVLA receive it?

And secondly, what happens if the new owner doesn't tax it till 1st Feb? Will the DVLA automatically pick up the fact it wasn't taxed for a day and send out a fine accordingly?

You'll pay to the end of the month that the DVLA process the change of ownership, and the new owner will pay from the start of that month.

I suspect unless your V5 is in the post already you will have to pay for February.

Surely if the date of change of RK on the V5 is 31/01/15 you will get a refund for the month of February? I'd hope so anyway (and I'm in sort of the same boat!)

Again, for your second question, I'd hope that after the date on the V5 for change of RK it's the new owner's responsibility for what happens tax wise with the vehicle!

It's a complete swizz if it's not like that...

Sadly this is not the case. I have sold a bike and car recently and missed a months tax on both because of this reason. Farcical but sadly the way the DVLA are stiffing us a little more.

Really?! If that is the case the DVLA really will have gone down in my estimation...

Looks like I will be sending the V5 for my old vehicle off tomorrow morning special delivery.

I would SORN it on the 31st. That way you definitely won't pay for February.

New owner can either retax it straight away and pay for a full January, or risk it and wait until the 1st Feb.

So DVLA process the refund based on the date received and not the date of change of keeper, yet expect the new keeper to purchase tax from date of change?

DVLA get two months duplication this way? If so, I won't be voting Conservative come May ....

Put the sale date on V5 as 1 Feb. Problem over.

What if the new owner expects to drive the car before then?

What about it? The car is presumably still taxed and will remain that way until either it expires or the change of keeper date on the V5.

Seem to be making a mountain out of a molehill here.

A tax refund has ALWAYS been processed based on the date of submission in the past. I can't believe they'll have changed that. Put the date of keeper change as 31/1, and 31/1 is almost certainly the date they'll work from. They'll certainly be consistent between the new and old keeper dates.

The new owner isn't actually picking up the car till 7th Feb, so I will SORN on 31st as I wont be driving between now and collection date anyway.

Problem solved! smile
