Actually I was interested in column shifts in general, they seem quite novel. Didn't know the new 7 had one - I thought it was either a traditional auto stick or a rotary dial a la Jag

I seem to recall a Renault 16 I was ferried about in as a kid had a proper column-mounted gear-lever. Also had vinyl seats that burned the crap out of the backs of your legs in the summer, a drawback not spotted by the European Car of the Year judges!

What about the dear old Trabant! Made all the more complicated by the free wheel. You might find a gear but there'd be no drive because the engine would be spinning too slowly.

Most 50s & 60s Holdens had them in Oz, & I thought the Ford Zephyrs & Vauxhall Velox had them too.

The Holden one required a bit of modification to give a fast shift from first to second.

As they became worn you had to give them a bit of time or the linkages jammed together, & you had to reach down under the bonnet, beside the steering column, with a long screwdriver to separate them.

The Renault 16 had a genuine column change but I think it e red production in 1978, before the Saab 96

A40 Somerset/Cambridge, 4 forward and pull the knob out at the end of the lever to overcome the reverse stop.
