I always liked the Merc boxes with first bottom left, used for stationary starts only, then out of the way.
Dog leg, as mentioned earlier.

Mate, no matter the explanation, it's a stupid question. Just put it down to a glitch in the matrix. We all have one from time to time.
I'd suggest a stupid answer.
AND for robinbanks- who don't know about Range rover Boxes- STOP being obtuse ,and answer the the question. .

Hands up who's ever seen a "LHD gearbox" listed for sale, for any car anywhere...?

Even more tricky on a motorbike, swapping the pedals over.

Motorbike guys can relate I am sure as some motorcycles have gear changes the "wrong" side and the "wrong" direction to normal...
I'm not aware of any bikes in the last 30 years or so - the controls are pretty much standard. BMW has (or did have) a different indicator setup.

Race shift pattern switches the gear selector to first gear up, whereas a road bike (usually) has first gear down, but it's a fairly easy mod depending on bike, foot pegs/rear sets and rider preference.

It wouldn't necessarily need a completely different gearbox, just a different stick-to-box connection configuration.

It would be added complication for no benefit, but it would be possible.

EFA

[/pedant mode off]

As an aside, I usually drive from the back seat facing backwards when in my LHD. Unless on the continent, when I'm strapped underneath the chassis.

What did you edit? I've been staring at it for a couple of minutes but can't spot a change.

The "Petrolhead" Simpsons
Cue theme tune .....

The Simpsons are going to Brazil.

Lisa: Ok here's some travel tips; only drink bottled water, don't get into an unlicensed taxi, and remember they have winter during our summer.

Homer: Wait wait wait wait wait, so in August it's cold?
Lisa: That's right

Homer: And in February it's hot?
Lisa: Yup

Homer: So it's Opposite Land! Crooks chase cops, Cats have puppies.
Lisa: No dad it's just the weather.

Homer: So hot snow falls up?
Lisa: (sighing) Yees

Yeah i was mainly thinking of old British bikes or race bikes.

I suppose the closest I came to an unusual setup in a car other than a dog-leg box would be an MGB GT, four speeds plus overdrive on a button. That was quite fun.

Reasonable question. The first time I drove a manual LHD I found it confusing that the gear change layout was the same and I had to push the lever away from me to change up.

Not as confusing as a (RHD) Diablo I drove though. Pulling the gearlever straight back changes down rather than up.

Have driven a Saab with a similar setup - most odd.

Otherwise, this is a gem of a thread hehe

Why change it without reason or cause? You'd need all new gearboxes for LHD and RHD cars? 1st is still top left with 3rd and 5th at the top and 2nd, 4th and 6th if it has one across the bottom? Car makers don't spend any more if they don't have to.
They'd have to make loads of new gear knobs too!
hehe

Never mind that.

Most of the world has the radio on/off/volume knob close to the driver. Not UK though.

How short do your arms have to be before that is actually a real problem?
