Never mind that.

Most of the world has the radio on/off/volume knob close to the driver. Not UK though.
Some makers have solved that problem and put the on/off button in the middle.
Then I could add to the can of worms that this post seems to have opened by asking why there's not a standard placement all the major control functions -wiper/indicator /hazards / etc etc . or why a certain firm that seemingly ( IMHO) bought a deceased British car empire for technical features they had failed to master and for a brand name only make a version of that brand for UK use with the single rear door opening onto passing vehicles ,if parked correctly on the road. Or even WHY this model got UK type approval . But then, that would involve a lot more tongue in cheek questions ,so I wont. rolleyesrolleyes

I always liked the Merc boxes with first bottom left, used for stationary starts only, then out of the way.
Stationary starts? What other sort are there?

Hands up who's ever seen a "LHD gearbox" listed for sale, for any car anywhere...?
Yep i have, ford sierras had the starter and clutch cable on the other side for LHD models, the gear change was the same though but the gearbox (with built in B/H) was listed for LHD.

Manufacturers would mirror the pattern if it was technically easier, but it needs many extra RHD parts on manual boxes. Simply a cost matter.

Why would they? No-one has, or ever has had, an issue as it is.

Useful when tightening cylinder head while changing gear. LHD engine, of course, one of those that spin in the opposite direction.

I can't tell you why. For example, it's cheaper with shift-by-wire; so they do it.

As you say, with autos the lever has little consequence to the operation, so you can do whatever the hell you want with it. As more cars are losing the manual gearbox, you'll see more LHD RHD variations.

Rerouting a physical connection to the box is an odd one, which is probably why noone has ever been arsed. The only slight downside is that it makes knock over reverse tricky for RHD.

Unrelated fact of the day. Honda used to design the engines backwards when compared to everyone else.
