Seem to be spoilt for choice, L200, HiLux, Nivara, Ranger etc etc

The Nissan gets good reviews but have heard bad storys about soft engines?

The HiLux seems to be the choice for buisness but hard to find at my price

The L200 seems to be well thought of if you don't mind the querky shapes

I have 10K, no more, to spend and was wondering what you guys feel is the pickup to go for.

What will you be using it for? Work or recreation?

The L200 is a reasonably good vehicle but the engines dont tolerate any overheating, the pistons pick up in the bores very quickly if heated. The Hi Lux has been the pick up of choice for ruggedness and reliability for many years but expensive and I dont think decent s/hands come on the market often. The Navara is probably the most luxurious and comfortable in the budget your looking at but dont think the improved engine model would be available in that price range. The Ranger is the dark horse, seems to be overlooked by a lot of people but is actually probably as good as the Hi Lux and no known major problems.

Shame about the budget - this is PH so the only answer is surely a Maloo!!

The Ranger has outsold the Hilux here in NZ this year for the first time ever - they're very popular, though Hiluxes hold their value exceptionally well and still seem more popular with farmers. Read into that what you will...

The Mitsis aren't known for their reliability, mates forestry company had a pair of L200s need gearboxes rebuilt with about 30k km on them and the dealer didn't seem surprised.

What about the VW Amarok? Seems to be very popular and well liked.

I have a hilux, but have had rangers previously not bad after 2006 the older ones are very low geared and the current ones have a transit engine!!. Quite like the Isuzu's but the Ranger would be fine ,Nissans the build quality and reliability is very suspect !! A ranger would be my choice for value for money ..
