Porsche Boxster R testing

Is this the Cayman GT4's soft-top sibling?

We know there's a really quick Porsche Cayman coming. Spy images have been circulating for months now, the car sporting bigger wheels, brakes and spoilers in the usual fast Porsche manner.

Come on Porsche, tell us something!

This car appears to be the Boxster equivalent. You'll notice immediately it doesn't look quite as aggressive as the coupe but there are a few little identifiers to mark it out as something special. See the GT3-esque bonnet lip, fixed spoiler and larger front intake. This doesn't seem to be a Boxster Spyder reincarnation though as the roof looks like a regular Boxster soft top. Note too it isn't running carbon ceramic brakes like the last Cayman we saw.

Given Porsche hasn't even yet confirmed these models we still can't be definitive on a specification. As and when there is anything more than just more ruddy spy images on this pair we'll let you know. They better be damn good.

Holding off ordering a new BGTS because of this, a bit more power along with less weight bring it on smile

Looks more like a new Boxster RS60 than a new Boxster Spyder.
Not necessarily a bad thing because the old one isn't very usable as a daily driver and this one should be much more pleasant to live with while delivering the same performance. I wish they would have gone all the way with a 918 style roof (removable carbon fibre panel like the old 911 Targa).
It will still be a brilliant car to drive, no doubt. A more focused GTS with extra power and less weight and the last N/A flat six in a Boxster... can't go wrong with that. It just looks a bit too ordinary in these pictures but there's still time.

There is a section in Car this month about Porsche in 2015, the only Boxster development is the Spyder, which is described as being a slightly less hardcore version of the GT4. My bet would be that this is the Spyder, either a powertrain mule, hence representative ride heights and lower bodywork for cooling etc, but not roof. Or alternatively the next Spyder won't have the rather beautiful looking but entirely impractical tent affair to keep the rain off your bonce. Just a thought...
