I get supply and demand but its still 7-8k for a 10 year old Honda, some of which are showing rusty wings and tired seat bolster.
In exactly the same way as an M3 is 7-8k for a 14 year old BMW, some of which are showing rust and tired seat bolsters.

That is if we are going to completely ignore all of the specific details that make both the S2000 and the M3 so much more than just an 'x-year old Honda/BMW'... wink

When I was looking with a ten grand budget two and a bit years ago, they started at three and a half, loads at about 5 and even very late ones were by and large under 12, dont think you can get a decent, roadworthy, MOTd one with no major faults for 4 to 5 nowadays, definitely gone up.

Thing is, roadsters arent really as available nowadays, okk we have the Boxster, which is very expensive and of course the perennial MX5, but the BMW Z4, though a nice car has a tin roof and has sold in tiny numbers, most Merc SLKs are diesel, auto and have a tin roof, Honda dont do one anymore, Nissan still sell the 370Z vert but have you seen one recently, there are less than 2000 370Z's out there and very few of those are convertibles, prob 1 in 8, so probably only a couple of hundred in total.

The S2000 has a bit of a cult following and not many come up for sale.

My tip at the moment for a bargain roadster is that Z3's can still be had for £1500, on the way up though.

They were cheap a few years ago. Now with them getting rarer and more sort after they are certainly rising in price. They are definitely not a car that will decrease in value any further.

I have a 2003 one for sale. My son, whose car it is, has disappeared off to Australia to live leaving me to sell his car! 113,000 miles, various new and modified bits to address known problems - expensive aftermarket timing chain tensioner for example.

it does help that loads have been written off when people have lost control of them ... my local honda dealer told me they had nick-named them 'widow makers' as they werent that expensive new and the middle aged men that had predominantly been sold them at that dealership had subsequently written them off!
I think they suffer from the same problem that the first Audi TT's did. They attracted a buyer, reassured by the brand names, that wouldn't normally buy a sportier car. The early S2000's chassis setup is often maligned but I didn't have a problem with mine other than it being a bit uncommunicative.

I love mine, it is an instant keeper as i spent 7 wanting one before i finally did it, 2001, dangerous handling and stronger VTEC kick actually made me choose and earlier one over a later, i would have loved it Starburst Orange but once i was ready to buy i couldn't wait for one to come along as they are Rockinghorse st rare

I was hoping mine would do another year with minimal costs as i've had issues with spending all my savings on a 3 month holiday to Australia.
Unfortunately it needs a bit of welding on the sills before it will pass an MOT, and if i'm going to put it into a body shop then it can't happen for a few months until i have sorted out the travelling debts and have a little financial cushion so a list that started off as:
Replace rear tyres.
Sort out issues with bonnet catch.
Replace rear brake pads/discs/calipers.
MOT S2000
Drive all Summer.

is now slightly longer and might take me a little while. frown

Indeed. I have friend who thinks the Jaguar 'F' & every Jaguar ever made is wonderful & gets REALLY annoyed when I tell him the front has been copied from the Honda S2000.

Seeing posts like this make me think again about selling mine.

It's low mileage (80k) and in reasonable condition but I'm starting to think I just fancy a change.

Is it common for them to need the sills welding?

I sold mine a few months ago and miss it, cracking car with a very well balanced chassis.

Anyone who says they're a 'widow maker' probably hasn't driven one on the limit or doesn't know how to drive one on the limit. They are actually surprisingly forgiving, perhaps not as much as an MX5 but not a widow maker by any stretch.

Owned mine for just over 3yrs now. A 2005. Bought for around £7.5 with 72K on the clock. It's now on about 114K. Had one major issue when a coil pack exploded but was fixed inexpensively by my local indie (TGM thumbup). Otherwise probably hands down the cheapest car I've owned by any measure...maintenance, insurance etc. It's no garage queen...gets used in all weathers. Values seem to be creeping up...but that seems true of lots of cars at the moment. I think they're great value and underestimated and perhaps looked down on...unfairly imo. Should be on everyone's bucket list to own at some point for the engine alone.

The signs that a car is well passed its best, yet folk are asking 7-8k for them. Not for me i'm afraid.

Buy a really cheap ropey bodied one with a sound engine, and get a Westfield single donor vehicle (SDV) kit. That engine in a Westfield is phenomenal.
