I have a friend who plays a game he calls 'Orbiting'.

If somebody is pootelling in the middle lane for no good reason he will overtake them in lane 3, move across to lane 1, slow down and allow the car to pootle past him again, then he will overtake again and repeat until he gets bored or the driver in the middle lane moves.

I can't condone this or say it's right, but it often wakes the other driver up and you can have bets on how many orbits you can do.

Undertaking should be allowed and those who hog the middle lane should be shot.

Legal to do so here (Australia) and you still get MLM.

Just makes it easier to get around them.

I can do 100kms in the left hand lane and not have to move out for anything except HGVs and make excellent time.

You mean it is literally like an armed resistance group plotting to overthrow a dictatorship that uses the deaths of citizens for cheap entertainment?

Wow. Sounds pretty full on.

Yes it is time to make undertaking legal.

Undertaking would be far less hazardous than picking your way between the hoards of cars sat in the middle lane and then picking your way back again.

Sometimes when I finally can't be bothered anymore, I drive up and sit right next to middle lane hogs (overtaking would be illegal) and just keep station with them. If they then want to exit, tough.

Meaning that there are now two of you blocking two lanes. As undertaking is entirely legal - learn the rules - you're being just as much of a PITA as he is.

.....hence why it's a good idea to legalise undertaking in these circumstances.

edit - sorry misread your post. I'm not so sure how that would go down in free flowing traffic with cars sat in the middle lane. It's different where one lane is congested. But I stand to be corrected.

Poor lane discipline can be found all over the UK, but when I commute around the m25 it seems a lot worse. I usually hit the m25 at 4am and there are many people sat in lane 3.

I always wonder what kind of driver has poor lane discipline and I've noticed several types. I think a lot could be foreign people as they always look lost? Perhaps holidaying in the UK? Maybe they learnt drive in country where it's free for all, like America? What I can't get is many of the drivers are cab drivers. WTF! They're meant to be professional drivers!

Absolutely 100% yes it should be made legal.

Having travelled extensively within the US where it's legal and now living in the UAE (where it's not legal but everyone does it including the police) I can honestly say it would make journeys on the UK motorways so much easier and less stressful.

There's no reason why it wouldn't work, they may be a few more accidents initially whilst the moronic populace got used to the concept but that would pass with time.

Change the motorways to a 2 stage limit as in France (90mph on clear days, 70mph in bad weather) allow undertaking and you'd remove half the congestion problems in one go... I'd vote for a party who recommended it.

People can barely use a motorway with overtaking on one side, let alone two.
While I agree with the above, if the Americans can manage it then why cant we here ?
I've found that a lot of the time it works well, but the downside is that more people use the outside lanes and don't overtake traffic. It doesn't matter much on a 4 lane motorway here in California, but when its on a dual carriageway and they aren't moving faster than the traffic in lane 1 its terrible annoying.

I'welcome that.

I usually undertake a car or two most days.

Dawdling abround 65mph on the duel carriageway, creeping ever closer to passing that 'slower' car going 62mph about 500 yards ahead. I don 't think twice about passing them on the inside becuase the morons just don't move over. Flashing them is a waste of time becuase it usually jsut slows them down or sit parallel to the next car just to piss you off.

I lived in the US from the age of four until 16. Every year we would drive from somewhere in the North (we moved a lot) to South Carolina and Florida. I have memories of sitting behind a couple of mini-vans, one in each lane, for miles on end on dual carriageway roads.

I'll have to disagree with that after seeing the standard of driving whilst in Houston back in November, a truly dreadful standard of driving and a total lack of respect or courtesy for any other road user was displayed by, well, just about everybody.

There are enough cameras on the roads just start issuing fines by post that will sort it out and make millions more than speeding.

Where did that extra 10mph come from, the limit's 70 wet, 80 dry wink

I drove back to the UK from France and I was astounded by the standard of driving. Not sure if I have just forgotten but Jesus it's bad. I did end up undertaking as many cars as I overtook.
