It annoys me when a seller says this or puts it in their ad.

Who cares who buys the damn thing.

If/when i've sold a car I just want it shifted, not fussed as to whether the new owner uses it to take rubbuish to the tip.

Some say it with houses too as if their possession has feelings.

Depends on the car, if it's just a shed who cares? If it's been your pride and joy and you've enjoyed it a lot, you might not want it to end up in some mug's hands, especially if it's rare or collectible.

On the other hand, it does often strike me as a 'hook' for a potential buyer.

I sold my absolutely minty MX5 to a guy who was buying it as a retirement present for his wife. Made me happy that it was going to make someone else happy.

A few years later someone pointed it out to me, it was on eBay and looked rotten and unloved. brought a tear to my eye.

If you're selling a white good motor though, fair enough.

Realistically, nobody say to themselves "I am a serial wrecker of nice cars, I fancy that but I wont ring as this isn't a good home".

If its white goods type cars that you have just bought and run, it doesn't matter, it is more the ones you have put time, effort and money into, my dad and me tidied up a rough MK1 Golf GTI from a bit of a bin into a nice car for the 19 year old me, paint, trim, suspension, brakes, new tyres, stereo, electrical work and some mods, ran it for a good while and I went to work in America for a while, my dad sold it to someone at work, it lasted three months before it was ruined, was a bit annoyed but in the scheme of things, it doesn't matter,

Even with run of the mill stuff, depends on the memories that come with it, we bought a Sharan new, bit of a crap car really but we carted our three kids all over the place in it, still wouldn't want to keep it, a few photos will do !

I'd want even my old BMW to end up in the hands of somebody who'd look after it. I've spent too much time and money De-chavving it (i.e. removing stupid wheels, changing exhaust, general TLC) to have some oik put silly wheels back on it and lower it and generally abuse it. Especially if it was a local sale and I was likely to see it around!

Much as I enjoy driving, buying and selling cars, I try not to get too precious about them. Buy them, enjoy them, move them on. I've occasionally come across old cars of mine that have subsequently been written off, modified, etc but I don't lose any sleep over it.

I hate selling my cars to someone who is going to spend the next few months wrecking everything I've done to maintain the car/bring it up to standard.

Sadly it seems anal mentalists like me who make cars perfect then have to sell them for one reason or another are few and far between.

My much loved E39 Touring has just gone to a mate who I know is going to run it into the ground. frown

It is stupid but you can get attached to cars I think. If I were to ever sell it there is no way I would sell my yellow CS to someone who admitted that they were buying it to use as a track slag - it is far too good for that for a start and there are many others about that are already used as such. On the other hand I wouldn't/won't care less who bought/buys the white one when it goes up for sale - the car is almost as good as the yellow one cosmetically and TLC wise but I just don't have the same bond with it.

I was just about to post a similar story, but then I realised (I think) your talking about me?!

I recognised Hornetriders old car in an advert from photos I remembered on PH, when it was mint, and it was a really rare edition too with the S-ltd Red leather interior etc. Contacted Hornet rider to ask him about it, anything to look for etc.

Went to see the car with a good inkling I was going to buy it (I was actively looking for one), and unfortunately had to let him know that the car was now a complete wreck, such a shame!

Don't write them off completely... usually, the people who want it to go to a good home are more flexible on the price and can be emotionally blackmailed into offering you a better deal!

I think it has something to do with how much time and effort you have invested personally in the car. I've usually spent quite a bit of time, money and effort on my cars bringing them up to excellent condition and sorting any issues, etc.

To then let them go to uncaring muppets who are just going to abuse and trash them would bother me slightly.

If it's just a 'white goods' car that's been used as an appliance, then who cares?

I do - well, for some cars.

For example, my first Chimaera, there were a couple of potential buyers whom I knew I would not sell to. She was going to go to someone who would love her and maintain her or she'd not be leaving my garage.

I had an Audi S6 saloon that I lavished a lot of time and money on. Bespoke leather interior, full detailing, wheels refurbed, milltek exhaust. I part exchanged it for a Range Rover.

More recently, I was in the market for another S6 and found this one for sale. Perfect I thought. I'd just buy it back. Turns out in the time since I'd sold it, it had been involved in an accident rendering it a Cat D, had been badly dechromed, the leather looked awful, it had been serviced at National Tyres and a "mate" of the owner had apparently chipped it. Why would you chip a 5.2 n/a v10 engine?

I was gutted.

My first MK2 Golf Gti. The absolute love of my life at 21 years old. Had a lot of time, money and love spent to get it how I wanted it.

Was forced to sell it to buy a house. Sold to a lad from Slough who claimed to be a bit of a perfectionist. Email two weeks later, he'd written it off. Was gutted.

Felt the same when I wrote the Monaro off too.

I wouldn't put it in an ad, day to day stuff who cares. But special cars I've cared for and bonded with I want to go to the right place.

I can remember telephone calls from some buyers who I've been less enthusiastic to sell the car to. I'm always pleased a car is sold and sometimes a little sad but not enough space, time, money to keep them all around.

I sold my immaculate Mk1 MX5 1.8 to an older chap who had a daughter with MS. He said the car would be used to take her out to places in the summer. It brought a tear to my eye seeing their excitement as they drove off on the day of pick up.
