Remove a TVR designed and built, race-derived flat-plane crank V8 and replace with a ten-a-penny Yank crate engine?
A hand-built "ten-a-penny" engine that's won more races than TVR could ever dream of. And it's reliable.

There is very little tuning potential to an LS7. ( compared to the LS3 )
GM designed the engine to win at Le Mans.
Pretty much all the work has been done for you.
Lingenfelter might disagree with the first statement.
Katech designed and built Corvette's race engines.
You can buy an LS3 engine for about £6K.
To get an LS7 - it is going to be about £11K
A Ligenfelter fettled engine ( no forced induction ) - is going to add another £10K on the LS7 - and you get about 150 extra ponies.
You might as well buy this - and get the 3 year - 60/100,000 mile warranty http://www.partsworldperformance.com/ls9-sc-v8-cra...

For Le Mans racing - you could only change/ upgrade certain components - which is why the LS7 comes with comes interesting innards.

So, adding 150 hp constitutes 'very little tuning potential'?

I don't think Pratt & Miller ever used an LS7 in a C5/6R Corvette - they used a Katech designed and built motor that the LS7 was subsequently modeled on, I think you'll find.

If you take a £10,000 engine - and spend £7-10,000 more on it for a 29% power increase.
And it isn't mild fettling we are talking here to get this. It is full engine strip down.
It isn't exactly a bang for your buck upgrade it.?

Just buy the LS9 or the LT4?

Yes - the LS7 came out of the C5R racing programme. But for Le Mans regs.... certain production components of the Z06 are not allowed to be changed.
Hence - as I said above - the LS7 has some interesting stuff in it because of that.

Might seem a strange way of looking at it, but I keep on dreaming of putting one of these into something and reveling in the high displacement, big power and sound with lots of tuning potential.

It seems that as you can buy a crate engine or one from a donor car (probably too rich for me) there are so many official GM and aftermarket parts you can use.

So, anyone got any wacky ideas??

Or would you say buy one with a Corvette Z06 attached to it, or go for one of the other LS engines? Not very keen on LHD and the plastic fantastic interior of the Corvette.

A bit of a daydream, but last time I started out like this I ended up with an engine swap and 450bhp in my now sold urquattro.
Lexus IS200 it fits with the gearbox & the gear lever even lines up in the same place as the original as the MK1 IS200 uses the same rear end as a Supra you're only a prop away stealthy fun times getting the electrics to talk to each other was a pain but an auto electrician done it in a day. Great fun I think the car is in Bulgaria now but it was a great bit of kit

I'm not denying or begrudging the engine its success, but if you want a car with an LS7 engine in it, then buy a Corvette and leave the Cerbera to someone who appreciates it for how it left the factory?

I'd rather fix my AJP than replace its heart and soul for something "reliable".

This every time. The AJP8 is a completely unique engine with a unique sound and unique character. It is unique to Cerberas (and a few Tuscan racers).

Given that Cerberas with a mere 400bhp spin their wheels through 1st, 2nd and usually 3rd gears and are doing over 80mph at the end of 2nd gear, there is no performance advantage to the LS cross plane V8 in a Cerbera over the characterful AJP8.

Mike Saunders of CerberaV8Racing has done rather well on a 4.7 litre AJP8 too.

There are plenty other cars with crap or unremarkable engines to bolt American V8s in to. A Cerbera should be left well alone from such butchery. A Cerbera IS the unique blend of subtle styling, GT comfort and an engine that sounds like rage.

Why is it you don't see people transplanting TVR engines into these kind of projects

Let me think...........
Partly because you can't just go to the factory and buy one and partly because most owners want to keep them in their cars, I suspect.

Also because due to the nature of enthusiasts, it's not a good market for the sellers (it wouldn't be worth their while to sell them.)

I'm saddened that on a forum like Pistonheads someone actually asked that.

Can't remember if it was a GM lump or maybe Ford, but there was a thread on here started by a PH'er who had put a 5.7 litre V8 in an E46 3 Series Coupe - he badged it a "357".
Otherwise looked pretty standard - nice sleeper!
Is that the BMW I saw at Santa Pod in September two years ago?
Black E46 3 series - check
357 on boot - check

If it were my choice it would have to be a rover sd1, suitably modified without detracting to much from its original good looks
But with an angry subtle look and no cosworth rear spoiler and an inviting interior rather than a spartan stripped out racer, , it's been a secret want of mine for a fair while, also a series 123 xj6 of a similar ilk would also be great yes
