Bloodhound SSC Comms Test: Time For Tea?

Out to South Africa for testing as the countdown to 1,000mph continues

Later this year Bloodhound SSC will aim to beat the 763mph land speed record set by Thrust SSC, ahead of a 1,000mph attempt in 2016. Exciting times.

This isn't a top speed run, or even practice. Sorry. It's a look at the communications side of Bloodhound SSC, the work that goes into ensuring messages between Andy Green in the car and the rest of the team are perfect. That means flying planes and driving cars very fast across the Hakskeen Pan, and obviously filming it in slow motion. Looks great.

News on the Bloodhound project had gone a little quite recently so it's great to see the team edging closer to what could be an incredible record. We eagerly await further progress!

Watch the video here.

I cant help but think Bloodhound is being set up for a massive fall. Its been YEARS in the planning and massive concepts and marketing (Ive been going to Goodwood FoS for years and Im fed up of seeing them now).

I just hope it all goes to plan or the press will be full of 'FAILURE OF BRITISH ENGINEERING' etc etc....

The pictures on that thread are amazing. The build quality is pornographic! Those solidly machined parts must cost a fortune.

This really makes me angry.

I can assure you everybody here is pushing as hard as possible to make this happen this year, currently we are on target for pushing for an 800mph record this year. I terms of car build it's been about 2 years, previous to that it's all about making sure the car is safe.

What engineering experience do you base your thoughts on us failing on, do you know much about any of the team? Do you have years of engineering experience behind you, have you been involved in any projects even remotely like this?

You miserable, pessimistic sod. They are are trying to achieve something incredible that has never been done before and in doing so are pushing boundaries in engineering, and from what I can make out are doing it for the hell of it.

It's bound to take time, and they are bound to come up against delays and problems along the way, as did Thrust 2 and Thrust SSC, both which turned out pretty OK in the end.

Oh, and it's "fed up with...".

Mini 360 - shuuuut it!!!!!!!!!!!

They have set the bar very high trying to break 1,000 miles an hour, they have a serious team behind them, if they only get 800 mph a new record and a great achievement. Good luck to all involved.

And that Jag F-type looks fab in that colour.

+1 on the sentiments Europa voiced.....it's about time the British press were told to be positive in their reporting of such amazing attempts biggrin (sorry I'd there are any grammatical errors!)

This isn't about winning a World Cup, this is about propelling a human being faster than we have ever been on land before. If it fails it won't be for the lack of trying.
Don't be such a party pooper, Mini360.

Wow, some defensive people here....

I can't wait for this to be another fine land speed success for Britain, but Mini360 was hardly castigating the project simply saying he fears it might be taken badly if it doesn't succeed as we British are really good at doing. No one I can see criticised the effort or quality of the people involved, some necks need to be wound in as such defensive comments and questions to the OP's ability to comment do suggest some nervousness.

Go do it, take the glory, rightly and best of British. Everyone wants this to be nothing but a fantastic success.

Bemoaning the publicity machine is a bit off though. Initiatives like the Bloodhound project need a long planning and advertising phase, and a constant stream of money to survive. It's a bit harsh to bleat because there is a lot of advertising at the FoS. Surely that is the most ideal place to advertise the project; somewhere where there is money floating around, waiting to be ploughed into a potential landmark for British engineering.

I wonder if Mini 360 will be bored of it when it's parked on lord Marches front lawn outside the house having taken the land speed record?

It may appear that I'm being defensive, yes I am, every team member works bloody hard, giving 100% all of the time. as for nervousness, it would be foolish not to be nervous as that would indicate complacency, at these speeds there is no room for complacency.

I don't think it will fail at all. It will be hard and like the previous thrust projects I suspect they will come very close to running out of money, but Richard will make it work smile

The publicity hasn't been motivated for commercial reasons. Bloodhound is one of the most inspirational engineering projects in the UK at the moment (after Scout SV, obvs) and BH is interacting with kids early in the "when I grow up, I want to be a...." path.

And that's hugely important, because we haven't got enough engineers and technicians right now. And we really, really need to turn that round if we want to step away from the low-skilled low-pay services-based economy we currently have.

You might be able to yet. When Thrust SSC desperately needed funding, they were accepting and grateful for all levels of contribution. The car carried my Grandfather's company name on a very small sticker because he donated some Jet Fuel.

I've paid to put my name on the tail and you can as well for £15 here http://www.bloodhoundssc.com/support-us#form.

Would PH be willing to spend £500 to get it's logo on the fin?

Wow my post has been taken waaaaaaaaaay out of proportion!

I whole heartedly agree with the above quoted post. I want it to succeed and I hope it does. I was merely saying the media has built it up so much, it would be a terrible shame if it failed. That's all. I never criticised the brains behind it or the engineering ability and I never said it would definitely fail. So please read comments and try to understand them fully before attacking the person who wrote it.
