The mk1 Mercedes CLS.

At one time it was the most attractive saloon car on sale, now it looks awkward.

It always looked awkward in grey IMHO but I still think they look fantastic in black, much better than the mk2.

Looked odd, inelegant and awkward from day one for me.

All cars age... some quicker than others. There again, some drivers are middle aged in their teens whilst others never grow up.

Am I the only person not to regard a car in terms of whether it has aged well or not?

It never crosses my mind to to regard a car in that way. The design of any particular car is what it is, imo.

E36 BMW didn't age well IMHO
As already said the E36 is now 24 years old..... and indeed nice low mile M3's are now becoming classics and increasing in value.....
I always thought these had aged quite well, especially when you compare it to the (only 3 years older) design of the E34 5 series, which by comparison look really old.

I guess actually though they're probably about 15 years old by now
The thing to remember with Jaguar is that they keep up the great British tradition of keeping everything in production until it's so laughably outdated and uncompetitive you forget it's even something you can buy new. They were selling these new in 2006 for God knows how much when you could pick up a decade old and nearly identical one for £10k. They repeated this same winning strategy with it's successor too, although that at least finally got an up to date engine halfway through its life. I'm expecting to be able to buy a new XF with the same awful 2.2 litre diesel engine when BMW will sell you a hovercar that can also go underwater and actually produce petrol while it does it.

I used to love them and always wanted one but they do look very old indeed now, even the late cars.

Now to me, and it is all about personal taste at the end of the day, I think the old XK is a car that will look good (and timeless) forever. In fact, were an thread to begin about cars that have aged very well, that would be my first choice.

As for cars that are old but still look good, the old XK would be a high ranking contender then too.

Sure, I think the XK8 actually looks alright, the arches are a bit big and round, the back end is a bit messy, but on the whole it's relatively good looking. I just think it aged quickly

TBH, I find most Jaguars have a bit of a throwback feel to them anyway, mine certainly does even though it's a mass produced one that doesnt really have any particular 'era' - it's always going to look dated if it's inspired by a design from long ago

Actually, andy-xr and marsred reminded me of one: Jaguar S-Type. To me it looked dated when it was launched.

The 1960s Jaguar S-Type was superbly elegant to my then young minces. Still looks good. Saw one in a bodyshop I visited a few months ago. Some Jaguar designs will never become dated to me. However, back then if stories I read are to believed, Sir W. Lyons never allowed a Jaguar to be produced until it has passed his personal "It must look right" seal of approval. It worked. Some Jaguars since his demise lack that elegance and I suspect that's partly due computer generated programmes and other constraints that designed them that do not "do" elegance. More's the pity.

Whatever became of Space, Grace and Pace? Ugly, bulky, fat gut inelegance is the new black .. smile
