Despite throwing up all last night I managed to find just that little bit extra thanks to the red interior. Why spend so much effort making it just the right amount of conservative then hand that over to the press?

This blue colour is nice but over a grand extra. 100 for a 12v in the back. That shoul be standard and they must be an awesome set of jump leads

Interior looks fab in these pics better than the Germans imo especially bow and Mercedes with the comedy pad slapped on the dash.

This new site design is awful .

Been using PH for years and theres no site I visit, or respect/enjoy for motoring journalism more. But the new font is harder to read, the picture alignment is confusing as they seem to wander into the adspace and the most recent comments list is immensely frustrating.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the old font and layout, please revert it!

I'm aware the site is free, but its only because it's so good I don't want it to change where it's not necessary.

BMW have their 3ltr diesel fast Derv engine with 50 + mpg when you want it and that for me is a problem moving over plus In London driving a Merc makes you look like a minicab or multiple Londis owner

I suspect most of the UK's driving population put what a car says about them to strangers above how it drives on their priority list; for many people it seems to be the absolute top priority.

Like it or not, cars have become almost more status symbol than means of transport in the UK, especially in London.

There's a lot more cash in London, property is the focus and you rarely park outside your own house or the restaurant where you meet friends.
I find suburbia the worst, where people use credit to drive cars they really can't afford.

By "London" I meant Greater London rather than the city itself, although why anyone would choose to keep a car in the centre of London at all, I've never really understood.

This entirely IMO. I live and work in London and own three cars but never drive into town. Work colleagues and friends knoe I am a car guy but never see my cars.

It seems very odd why someone would buy a car based on if others may think they are a mini cab driver. Far more Passats, Priuses etc doing that role in London. There are however plenty of new black S Classes in the city but these are corporate firms' cars.

It can be easy to move around in a car, particularly at the weekends. There are also plenty of lovely cars of all kinds in town which are always great to see.

partly because no ConCharge?
I'm thinking of central london, where because of the CC traffic actually moves. Often the big jams occur outside CC area in places like Hammersmith.

Fascinating, although not original, view. However, as we all know, it is wrong. Humans have, do and always will care. All you achieve by pissing into the wind is wet legs.

Besides, the chap is correct, Merc make commercial vehicles, trucks, vans, minicabs and limos.

No you wouldn't. I keep 4 cars in the centre of London. I used to keep some out of Town but you never use them. If you have the mentality to live in London then you are used to a faster pace of life. As such you want your cars here so that when you get a window to use one you aren't having to faff about trying to get to it.

But also people have cars because however well London is hooked up for public transport peoples' lives can mean cars are needed. For example, most public transport flows in and out rather than across. This is fine if you are going in that direction but if you aren't then a car can become more viable. Also, most Londoners aren't driving during the week but use cars at evenings and weekends. When you look at all the cars commuting in and through London each day they aren't Londoners. Almost no cars move on my street during the day.

But I agree completely with your view that the car has become far more the status symbol than ever before but that is simply because of the open access to debt. On my street the majority of the cars are at least 5-10 years old and basic models. I'd say that the average value was probably the £5k mark. Head a couple of miles out and start getting into suburbia and values rocket although incomes have fallen.
