Recently my partner bought a new car from Ford. The deposit was paid on the 12th of January, and we were told the car should be delivered by the 23rd January. Today we were told that the car is being held in their Dagenham facility for inspection, and is likely to be held for 2 weeks. As we have completed the finance paperwork, we are due to begin paying for the car from the 1st February, however it looks like we will be without a car until mid February. The dealership is unwilling to offer us an alternative car in the interim, as they say that the dealership is not at fault for the delay, rather the issue is with Ford.

What would you do in this scenario?

That seems fairly stty of them, I've had problems when picking a new car up before - Volvo were at fault but the dealership gave me a courtesy car no questions asked.

If they were so belligerent about the situation I'd be explaining to them that you have no issue cancelling and taking your business elsewhere - and mean it, they are a volume manufacturer after all, sourcing another wouldn't be too hard.

I'd be on the phone to Ford to find out why they've seen fit to inspect it at Dagenham and why it'll take two weeks.

If your finance was arranged through Ford then I'd speak to them as well.

I would also give the car a very detailed check once it's delivered.

I wouldn't pay a penny until the car has arrived and is satisfactory, unless they can provide you with a stop-gap.

I would guess, as is the norm with franchised dealerships now, that a lot is made of and potentially a big bonus is riding on the feedback received on the post-handover CSI questionnaire, usually via email.

It may be worth mentioning you'd find it difficult to recommend them or give positive feedback given you are being left without a car for a month. Delays happen, sure, but you're their customer and thus it would be sporting of them to see you right and that you are not inconvenienced massively, which I would say you are being without wheels for that period of time.

I wouldn't pay a penny and request another car to cover you until the new one arrives. What would have happened if you had sold your old car and now left without transport? (Having a replacement car also incentivises them to get your new car quicker.....)

Contact the dealer in writing requesting this and what date you need a response by (polite and firm). If no joy, contact Ford direct with the email trail.

Best of luck

Go over the paintwork very carefully when it does arrive, to see if I could spot which bit got bent en route.

It's been pranged and needs to go through their bodyshop imo.

And? That's not your problem, it's the dealerships. You are buying a car from the dealership. It is up to them to supply the car and if they have an issue they should take that up with Ford, not pass the problem on to you.

Yep.

Go over it with a fine-tooth comb looking for bad paint, badly fitting panels/bumpers, over spray.

Thank you all for your input. I shall be insisting on an alternative car in the interim when I next speak with them, and I'll be sure to inspect the car very carefully.

I'll provide an update once I have spoken with them tomorrow.

It does sound very much like bodywork repairs. I wouldn't accept a brand new car that has just had bodywork repairs, paintwork, etc. Get them to sign something that states that the car has had no bodywork repairs and is finished in factory paintwork. If they are unwilling to do this, then walk away.

Either bodywork as suggested or the dealership has fked up and not ordered it correctly or on time and they're scrabbling around trying to get another one of the right spec instead and it just so happens that the first they can get is available mid February at the earliest. Either way, as others have said don't pay for something you haven't got and it's the dealership's problem to sort.

If you are due to make the first payment in February it sounds to me like the finance company think you have taken delivery already, you need to get on the phone to the finance company and tell them what's happening as I don't think they would be happy about having already transferred the cash to the dealer who hasn't delivered the car yet

If you are happy to continue with the order and delivery is expected to be mid February , is it worth haggling for a 1 March delivery and a 15 plate rather than a 64?

A lot more cars than you think have paint in between the factory door & delivery to the customer. It just so happens that *maybe* this has happened and the OP has got wind of it as the possible incident has delayed delivery.

Thanks, I will do this.

The deposit covers the first payment, which according to the finance agreement covers the period from the 1st February-1st March.

Definitely worth thinking about.
