It doesn't have to be that extreme.

Most older cars could be improved enormously with better ignition systems an fuel management, better coolant systems, more powerful brakes and a bit more power. That shouldn't destroy the character of the car in less you're one of these people who believe that cars being unreliable can be misrepresented as character.
TR6 with updated fuel injection on ITBs, nice exhaust system to bring the best out of the straight six, some more modern brakes and suspension, nothing too lairy.
Sounds close to ideal smile

A remastered '71 Lincoln Continental would do it.

A Rover SD1 Vitesse.

Subtle modern upgrade. Total top quality rebuild using 40-odd years of Rover V8 tuning know-how. Monaro / VXR beater but with the character of a lairy old school SD1 musclecar.

eta - Have we had a SD1 thread on PH before?

I'd like to see a modern version of the Lotus Elite (Type 14)

Lightweight, good fuel consumption, modest grip and a beautiful composite monocoque bodyshell

What you have right there, is an MX5 with a hard top.

Get an Audi S7, stick some cross spoke alloys on it, change the front indicators, stick a huge spoiler on the back. Job done.
