Mine (a relatively humble VTR - though the difference between the VTR and the VTS was very similar to the difference between 8v and 16v Golf, ie. not very much unless you had the space to push past 5k rpm in every gear)
Ahh, the standard denial of VTR owners!!There was about 2 seconds difference in the 0-60 dash. Not much indeed.
If you've never driven a VTS.
I'd love to own one of these, or preferably a 106 GTI. It's hard to find a good one now. Not many about and out of those 8/10 look like rolling scrapheaps and/or chavved within an inch of their lives. Also with me the insurance companies are taking the piss. It'd cost £3000, instead of the £700 I'm paying on a 1.1 106.

1999/2000 mk2 facelift without the euro 3 ecu etc is the model to have, 2001-2003 much more problematic. Mk1 dated looking.
I'll second that - all the ones I've known have been tempermental and I've had countless ECUs and looms on mine. never had an electrical issue with a saxo till I bought a 3 plug VTS. Kitchski said:
Clicked the Youtube link above and never realised how many Saxo VTS-related road tests there are on there:
Richard Hammond in a previous life comparing a VTS to a Caterham!
Great Videos.Richard Hammond in a previous life comparing a VTS to a Caterham!
I did like this one in particular. Oh how times have changed from back when a 'top end - totally mad' Caterham was 20K.
...And thats not a K series engine in the red one is it Mr Hammond
Sorry - back to the Sax chat.
I always quite liked the blue one in Gavin & Stacey.
I had a new one of these from new (W Reg) in Diabolo red (?). I must have been very lucky because mine was extremely reliable. I did nearly lose it to the dreaded lift-off oversteer, they could certainly be snappy. It was terrific fun though.
I currently have its replacement (C2 VTS) which,as the article states, isnt as much fun - only slightly more power (if spec to be believed but sounds like Saxo had more than stated anyway) and more weight.

I had one of these as a first car in Gold nearly new at the time. Absolutely loved it.
Some other points to watch:
- ECU problems
- Drainage channels at the front of the sunroof regularly block with dust
- Seat railing, can wear with time causing the seat to slide arround on it's own accord

I wouldnt agree with all the faults listed in the article..
I've had my VTS nearly 3 years and before that I had a VTR, a westcoast (1.4) and an S1 1.1 106.
I rarely ever see a VTS on the road anymore, as the sheds get scrapped or written off, I feel like it's just leaving real enthusiasts.
I wouldnt say that shed of the week was a particularly great buy or a good standard example!
There's still a few good examples out there though for sure
mine -
OH's -
Both daily drivers and used on track we both have second cars but can't part with these little tins lol
Those look in great nick Nicole - a credit to you - I have a soft spot for black ones.I've had my VTS nearly 3 years and before that I had a VTR, a westcoast (1.4) and an S1 1.1 106.

I saw a white one a while back - never remember that colour in brochure in 98

Always had a little bit of a soft spot for these and I'm sure they're heaps of fun for the money....but they're just too chav-tastic in my mind. Not sure I could live with one :P
My thoughts exactly. I'm going to be spending shed money on my next car in March and I've been looking at these but I'm not sure I can get past the perceived image.iacabu said:

How you think others would think of you would seriously affect what car you buy?!
OT but I didn't realise you were ex-SSC, I really must stop in for a chat one of these days, I drive past your place every day to work.TankRizzo said:

What a corking start to the year Shed! I can't remeber such an uninterrupted run of tempting sheds.
(It's going to be a mkII Laguna next week isn't it?)
(It's going to be a mkII Laguna next week isn't it?)
I would happily drive around in a mk2 Laguna rather than spend a grand on a Saxo, its not the cars fault, its the image it gained around here (and probably everywhere!) because of the 'mentality' of the people of the people who drove them, when I see one, and there still are a few about here, dragging its arse on the floor, with wheels that are way too big and an exhaust that sounds like a wet fart in a paper bag, oh, and the fog lights on when its not f'kin foggy and I just think 'prick'. Give me a nice 106gti anyday though.
P.S I only mentioned the Laguna because my missus old man's got a re-mapped dci and it surprised me....quite a lot.

Wow, that's a massive difference. And those crashes simulate collision between similar cars, imagine crashing this 900kg Saxo with Mondeo or similar..
That's just reminded me of the time I was reversing up a narrow street, in the dark, with misted up windows in a Granada and I mis-judged how much gap there was between me and the Saxo beside me, end result? The Granny needed a bit of T-Cut on the rear quarter and the Saxo was in the body shop for nearly a week.
