Our old Passat failed her MOT today. 53 plate, 1.9TDI 130, estate (auto). 150k miles

Garage reckons about £700 to fix. Work includes new drive shaft (something to do with cv joints - I think).

She's been a good old girl - but at £700........ frown

Sold to a scrappy I guess she'd be worth nothing. What is the best way to sell her with no MOT?

Thanks in advance.

£700 for a driveshaft seems steep! What else did it fail on?

I'd take it elsewhere and have it re-MOT'd. Find an MOT centre that doesn't do work.
You might find it passes. My car's lost 3 advisories, two of which sound expensive, between me switching from a garage that MOT as well as work, to an independent MOT centre.

It is more than just a driveshaft though?

OP?

I thought scrap cars were worth a couple of hundred quid as a lot gets recycled now.

They're pretty cheap, but I'd argue on the 'good' bit.
Good is another matter entirely, in fact, after dealing with their customer service, I refuse to use them at all any more, for anything, they're terrible.

Anyway, you need a new pair of front springs fitting too, so that explains some of the bill, they're taking the mickey a bit with the price of that driveshaft though.

So it needs a shaft, a spring and a few bulbs....still that price is high.

Get it repaired and carry on driving your car for a few more years yet.

Is the car making terrible noises when being driven, especially when cornering? If not I'd question the CV joint failure. Was this a large multinational with targets to meet?

And even if it is a legitimate test, the prices are ridiculous, £200 will have that all fixed.

Slight question mark over the cause of the indicator issue aside, that little lot is basically £100 worth of parts and a leisurely weekend's work for a half competent DIY mechanic. I reckon that'll do well on the 'Bay. I'd make you an offer if I had the space smile

You fool! The Mrs drives it - she does't need indicators wink

In all seriousness, the car has been sat on the drive for 10 months.
