I love the fact there are people speculating over what could possibly be the cause for the aim of both headlights being too low and how both headlights could've coincidentally failed in the same way.

One of the front springs is snapped in two, of course the headlight aim is low! hehe

TeaVR, I agree with those who say eBay if you want to get rid. There are plenty of people out there who will consider those faults minor, fix them in an afternoon for a couple of hundred quid and keep her motoring.

As an update, I found a local VW specialist who will do the job for approx £300. I'm chuffed.

Good job, always pays to shop around - especially when the garage who failed the MOT quote for the work wink
