So yesterday I assaulted a cold and wet Brands Hatch in my A220 CDI (no laughing). It was too wet to take the Lotus and I had the thought that it could be fun to see how a stock modern hatch faired against more focused metal.

Long story short, the little Merc did a sterling job which got me thinking...

I'm moving closer to home with work and fuel price is at its lowest for a long time, so should I reduce the fleet by one and get a new car that wears both hats and if so, what would I get?

Budget is around 45k (that's the cost of the A45 specced as I'd want it) and the car must be useable on road, track, nursery duty. Preferably with auto/paddles (it's the future) and with that special something.

What say you all?

Does it really have to be new? Looking through the ph classifieds for £45k you can get some very fast and special cars.
Something like any of these....

The Mercedes A45 AMG's Big brother the C63 for £38k http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/m...

an Audi RS5 can be had around the £45k mark too http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/a...

or if you are willing to really take the plunge you can get an Aston Martin DB9 for £45k you only live once and surely everybody wants an Aston
http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/a...

or you could have its little brother the V8 Vantage. http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/a...

A Maserati can be had for £45k too http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/m...

Yeah, I guess I'm looking for alternatives to the A45. Has to be new as I've just had my fill of used motors!

I remember James May taking the piss out of a couple who had spent something like 26k on an A class on top gear.

Doesn't look that bad considering the above.

Without looking I bet 45k would get a nice 997 911 Carrera.

F-type might be almost doable and surely a fair bit more special than an A45.

As you say you want new trying to think away from the obvious competitors which would be a Golf R, M135i, M235i, Audi S3. Some options could be:
Nissan 370Z- similar power output and a proper sports car rather than a Hot Hatchback.
The New Ford Mustang is priced well and you could get the V8 for under £40k.
An Evo or scooby would do both jobs well too.
The Mercedes GLA45 looks an odd thing but similar performance to the A45 and more space and the odd chance an A45 isn't rare enough the GLA45 is even rarer.

A45 AMG is a comedy special IMO. An expensive Golf class car whose only strength is to enable buyers to say "I drive an AMG".

Avoid.

Surely it's more than that Cloudie Skies? Have you driven one on road and track? They're not cheap I'll give you that!

I do like the look of that, thanks for sharing. I know (and was an advocate of) buying used means you get a lot more for your money etc etc but I'm kind of fed up now with used cars as I just can't leave them alone...I have to fiddle and the more I do, the more I'm unhappy with any work that's been done before my ownership which ends up spoiling the experience for me.

Anyone on here (reading this ofcourse) who has an A45? I take it you have the 235i?

Sadly no I do too many miles I had the 225d on order but the 6 weeks build turned into 6 months so Ive got a new F30 30d actually cheaper on the PCP because no dealer discounts on the 2 series at the time Oct 14

The new 'stang would be an interesting option.

I'd consider M3 CSL. Not new of course but a perfect one car to do almost everything!

Yeah I love the CSL (and 1M) but I'd really prefer new now. I have a series 2 Exige S at the moment aswell as my A220 CDI. The Lotus is an awesome car and is actually quite useable but it couldn't be my only car due to children.

I've always had a sensible daily car (new) and a bonkers weekend special (used) and could in theory continue down that road I suppose but it just doesn't seem to be working for me these days!

The new 370Z Nismo looks like a hoot to drive! Or stick with your heart and get an A45.
I built a 370Z Nismo, £43,964 every option added!
Hope I helped!
