Was the whole point about alloys not that they were originally lighter than their steel counterparts?

Is it no longer important to reduce unsprung weight?

Now that alloy wheels seem to be heavier than their steel counterparts is there any advantage to having them, apart from cosmetics / fashion?
Very few base spec steelies weigh more than the alloy wheel options wink

Used to have steelies on my 1991 Eunos. I quite liked the looked and was better than scabby, kerbed alloys that most sported at the time....

Mark "Wenny" Wenn's huge power Escort MK3 runs on the largest steels available in 4 stud pattern [Mondeo 15" I believe]

to keep the sleeper look..........as he tears up the 1/4 mile in about 10 seconds or less.

Ford have the right idea with their steel wheels that look like alloys. Five-spoke steel rims with a cover so you can still see through to the brakes as in a normal alloy wheel:

Personally I love the look of plain, silver steel wheels. Especially with a nice, simple black centre cap to top it off.

Another +1 for the MX-5 on steels.

Rare to see, despite the alloys being a UK importer fit option - guess most went to the scrap man.

No way, I've had two Saxos in that colour. Easily the best colour!
  • I still browse the classifieds for another VTS in that colour*

I don't like the look of them, not even when they're on a Caterham to be honest.

Mind you, they're great for peace of mind and not having to worry about kerbing your wheels. Instead of it being a new alloy or repair job, it's just 20 quid for a new set from Halfords.
I think you're missing the point. Steelies = without wheel trim

+1 for the cool utilitarian look smokin

Hides brake dust brilliantly as well - the alloys used to get absolutely covered in it from stopping such a big beast all the time

When did using tyre dressing equate to utilitarian?
