Any love for steel wheels?

Very few new cars look good on steel wheels also personally mx5s look hideous with steel wheels on even worse than the original 14 inch daisey alloys most come with.

The dodge looks good along with the morgan and pug the rest look hideous.

Hides brake dust brilliantly as well - the alloys used to get absolutely covered in it from stopping such a big beast all the time

Oh, just a shade darker, not painted black or anything like that

The thing is, I think my cars need bigger wheels, not for the sake of looks but for the accomodation of the brakes.

My Freelander 2 has 18 inch wheels, I have seen them in 17s so I guess thats the minimum.

My MGFF has standard brakes at the mo, but I do want to upgrade tem to AP front callipers - hence my choice of MGF Trophy wheels.

I understand the PCD? The dimensions of the bolt holes I think, restricts the type of wheel I an choose.

I'd love those steels seen on a TR6, but I guess 15 inch spares is my only choice.

Over winter I ran my old E46 330i on silver 17' steels and prior to this my 8L S3 had 16' steels with Audi hubcaps..... They both got some odd looks!

Will try and dig out some pics.

This thread reminded me of a search for 17" steelies for my 330Ci that ended unsuccessfully a couple of years ago. Another quick search now has found some on www.tyres-pneus-online.co.uk for £58.20 per rim. I'll try to remember to get some for next winter as there's little point getting some now... I think.

Even a chunky alloy is far, far lighter than a steel wheel of the same strength. Otherwise you'd see top end racing cars running around on steels....

For the same size, you're right, but we mustn't forget that the alloys are typically bigger and fitted with wider tyres. On most modern cars, the steelies are the lightest option - unless an alloy is available with the same tyre size, which seems increasingly rare.

Nice find on the E46 steelies! I'm really tempted to get a set to go on mine for winter. Mine's dark red and I think would wear it better than this, but still looks very cool:



Hard to justify when I've got loads of spare Style 30 alloys knocking around, but this just wouldn't be as right..
