After lots of research and deliberation I have finally settled on a Z4. Initially I set my heart on the first of the new shape (E89), but then decided that a 2007/08 Sport 2.0 would adequately fit my needs (preferably in black). The sports seats suit my bad back and I am a relatively sedate driver so the 2.0 is perfect, and should be a cheap car to run with home maintenance. So having decided, I have been following the classifieds and local auctions.

I was ill a couple of weeks ago so had plenty of time to browse the internet when a 57 plate 2.0, 2 owners, 32k FSH Z4 in black came up at auction for sale the next day. I struggled out of bed and headed off to the auction - car was perfect in every way, in my head I set a max price of £7k so together with the £500 indemnity fee would still be cheaper than a private sale (not by much though). I worked in the trade many years ago so am comfortable at auction - the bidding started at £5k and I dropped out at £7k and it sold to a dealer for £7100. As soon as the hammer fell I knew I had made a mistake - the car was perfect and I had lost if for a few hundred pounds. I am now faced with a continued search for the right car which may or may not involve a trip down the country. Two weeks on and I still kick myself. To compound matters I saw the car on AT for £9k

So, any cars you regretted not buying?

About 10 years ago I was looking at Porsches and possibly a 964. A partner at the firm I worked at told me they were dogs and the ugly sister of the 993 that people only bought if they couldn't stretch to a 993. I listened to him. More fool me.

Sierra RS500 Cosworth back when prices were circa £10k for a pretty decent one, rather than the £35-£50k for the equivalent one now.

I had the chance of a fairly mint corrado g60 for £1500. I loved it but turned it down because I was too worried about the supercharger I later discovered a pher owned it shortly after I had the chance and had no problems frown.

S13 200sx in black, in standard mint condition (touch of rust around the tailgate), about 10 years ago. Guy wanted 500 for it, I only had 400 however he wouldn't budge.......should have found the extra 100 but didn't.....

In 2010 I walked away from buying a mint 964 Carrera 4 for 10.5k all because the seller wouldn't drop to 10k. Dam! 6 months later I agreed to buy a TVR Chimaera 400, was in the process of booking flights and the seller called to say he'd changed his mind on the price agreed and wanted another £100. I walked away, this was 5k at the time!

Cars I've not come close to buying but should've:
Ferrari 308 and the Ferrari 400.
sierras cosworths
Merc r107s
BMW e30 m3

That's enough just now, don't want to get too depressed! wink

Whilst there are many cars I should have bought for financial gain, at the time it didn't make sense.

Everything that I should have bought, even on tick has gone up in value but at the same time could easily have gone the other way so I'm not overly fussed if I'm honest.

Remember that not long ago, people were struggling to shift F1s at a shade over a mil. Would have been with buying every one with some strap at those prices!!

I was offered a very good condition (both inside and out); relatively low mileage; FSH, Toyota Supra mk4 Twin Turbo Auto UK car two years ago. Simply needed two new rear tyres. That was all.......

My colleague offered it to me for £350 as his wife was hassling him to get rid due to a child on the way. He knew I was into my cars so offered it to me at a stupidly low price with no catches.

Why I didn't do it I'll never know. Still kicking myself today!

I should have bought the 1987 e30 M3 I test drove in 1998 for £7500 instead of the 5dr Impreza WRX import for £13250.

Nearly purchased a pontiac firebird in about 1990 and the only thing that put me off was not the fuel consumption it was the problem of spares.

I also kick myself for not purchasing a Lotus Cortina offered to me back in about 1988 for £1000.

In those (auction) situations it helps to remind yourself that you may not've got it for £7200, or even £7500. Who's to say what price you'd have been bid against up to! Still annoying, but makes it slightly less annoying to play over in your mind!
