What percentage of your income do you spend on cars?
Discussion
0% including diesel. It is an old shed though! The car is owned outright and I claim my diesel back through my company. I'm sure it must be costing me something but there's been nothing yet in 6 months (apart from deprecation) - Touch wood!
I'm seriously tempted to get a loan out for something nice again over a short term which would use about 50% of my disposable income but the mrs wont let me!!

Do you have a fuel card? In which case it will be costing you something via income tax I'm seriously tempted to get a loan out for something nice again over a short term which would use about 50% of my disposable income but the mrs wont let me!!

I averaged 9p/mile profit over 100k miles in my old ZX, got even better when towards the end of the job they changed the rules on veg oil and I started using rape seed oil at 50p/litre when diesel was £1/litre RobM77 said:
It was a brief comment in a list of others typed quickly, but yes, I can back that up with numbers. Evo magazine lapped a P1 at Anglesey at 1min11.2 (once Mclaren had delivered new tyres for the car): http://fastestlaps.com/cars/mclaren_p1.html. The current Monoposto (club single seater racing) lap record for a FF Duratec on the same circuit is 1min11.070 http://www.monoposto.co.uk/results/lap-records/lap... Regarding the value, the P1 was about £900k IIRC and there are FF Duratecs everywhere at the moment for £10k to £13k due to the recent change to EcoBoost engines. Now, in the interests of fairness, whilst Jethro from Evo is a pretty handy driver, a pro could perhaps knock a second off his time, I think we could agree on that. However, Monoposto have to run their cars with a 4cm ride height and because of this they're always a bit slower than the original spec cars in lap times, plus they're not pros, so I'm confident that with the same capable driver in both cars, the FF would be quicker, more than two tenths in fact. Needless to say, I could have easily said a Formula Renault, which would be about £5k more to buy and would wipe the floor with both.
ETA: If the above FF1600 time is correct, then yes, a Duratec FF would be quite comfortably faster than the P1.
That 1m 11 for the Coastal Circuit would have been with a Formula Ford Zetec, the Duratec FF was only admitted last year and we've not been to Anglesey for 3 years. ETA: If the above FF1600 time is correct, then yes, a Duratec FF would be quite comfortably faster than the P1.
1m 04 was set with a Mono2000 car by my brother in a Toyota engined Mono legal Dallara - 40mm ride height, some aero and a 3S-GE out of a road going MR2 - about 190hp as no alternator, no PAS, no air con and a better exhaust. Tyres would have been Avon slicks. I know a similar car sold for about £ 15k not so long ago.

The FF1600 was probably running on ACB10s, the same tyre fitted to the original Caterham R500 and yes, they're road legal and arguably no more extreme than the expensive rubber the Mclaren P1 wears.
Yet a quick Google reveals the FF is over 23 seconds slower around one of the most famous racetracks in the world. Which is probably why the P1 was built, rather than Anglesey.Edited by RobM77 on Wednesday 11th February 12:48

No fuel card mate. I'm a contractor and claim it back in expenses. Yes I pay it out initially but the tax i save in expenses at 45 ppm generally covers the money I shell out. The old golf is economical enough that I never need to put any more in for my private mileage. 9.4% Fuel
7.8% Car parts
4.2% Car Servicing
7.7% Car Tax / Ins
That's for 3 fairly impractical cars and 2 motorcycles.
Fuel is higher than usual as I used my petrol Range Rover for commuting over the winter
I didn't realise it was so high at 30%, I might cut down on my parts buying...

Pretty shocked at some of these numbers.
If over 10% of my net was being sunk into a fast depreciating asset or even a hobby (if we want to look at it like that) then I'd be questioning myself...
Which is why I asked the question as I was beginning to think my 20% was a little on the high side!If over 10% of my net was being sunk into a fast depreciating asset or even a hobby (if we want to look at it like that) then I'd be questioning myself...

Different strokes etc., some people have families and whatnot to consider, but if a monthly take home is £1500, I don't think it's unreasonable to spend £150 a month on a hobby/pastime. Nights out once a week will easily run to £150 a month for some folks, adding up cost of drinks, kebabs, taxi etc.If over 10% of my net was being sunk into a fast depreciating asset or even a hobby (if we want to look at it like that) then I'd be questioning myself...
My two cars and bike are basically my hobbies I love them...so mostly everything I earn is going their direction sometime or the other, I save-up over the winter to feed them tyres and fuel in the summer.
Bloody money pits, I'd hate to count up what I've spent on cars and bikes over the years.

Tax, fuel and savings (to fund my next car) equates to about 70% of my income.
With maintenance, insurance and depreciation it would obviously creep up more.
EDIT:
Doing the maths, including maintenance, insurance and depreciation its around 85%.
Wow.... I need a cheaper hobby!
