That rendering looks absolutely fantastic. Be pretty happy if it does end up looking like that!

Where would your money go instead?
On a 2nd hand F430. Easy.

Being the first to park my bum on a seat is not important to me, but if I was buying a 2 seater exotic I would want an exotic badge on the bonnet!
The point in the Audi, AFAIK, is that it isn't an "exotic". It's supposed to be an everyday-usable, reliable sports car that will be equally as happy lapping up 20k of motorway miles or at a Silverstone track day. Maybe I'm missing the point but I always thought that the R8 was designed to go toe-to-toe with the 911 family rather than compete directly with the Gallardo/Huracan or Ferrari 4** series.

it would be daft for audi to market head to head with lambo when it owns it

however with this car using the same "tub" V10 engine, gearbox etc its going to be harder for them to justify

Correct. I had mine as a daily drive/only car and it was so easy to live with while providing a great driving experience.

That's kinda the point of the matrix lights. The tiny square of projected light that would hit your car is switched of instantly it sees your cars lights. Very clever. See it explained here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwLiY-J0bJQ
Truly impressive video. There is a peculiar feeling, a satisfying feeling, as the light rotates round the apex of each curve.

Before the War, headlights were as much about the other guy seeing you as you seeing any bit of the road, yourself. How far we've come.

Twice the range? Does that mean that drivers are issued with binoculars to be able to see that far?

Seriously though, is there any limit to how bright headlights can be?

My eyes hurt at night. Though LandRover are the worst, plus their lights are higher at eye light of other motorists.

Good.

Now all we need is for the current V10 models with Manual boxes to drop well below £50k when its my turn to choose the family 2 seater.

They have two years, to do it, before her SLK has to go back.

Being Audi there's every chance when the covers come off it will look exactly like the old one....and we'll all be disappointed.

I really hope not...but looking at the covered up profile, it looks pretty similar so far.

I wont be, particularly - the old car is a nice enough looking thing. How it drives is more important. smile

I've driven cars fitted with the laser lamps and frankly they're marketing bullst and total rubbish.

They only operate at speeds over around 50mph when there is nothing within sight in front of you. Then you get 2 very focused long distance spots. It's actually quite distracting seeing bright spots coming on and off.

They're never worth the £10k that is asked for them, even the lighting manufacturers have told me they're a waste of time and merely a vanity project.

Decent LED high beam is all that is necessary.

You might deduce from this that I'm not a fan of Laser headlamps. hehe

The vertical vents under the lights remind me of the old W12 Nardo concept (though offset)

I'm so bored of the manufactures reveal it bit by bit trend of recent years.

The mass majority of the public, which includes the majority of purchasers, simply don't care. It won't even cross their radar.

That leaves the enthusiasts. Why wind us up with articles that show and tell us so little.

Very boring overused worn out marketing. Time for something new people.

As for PH, this is just noise on your site. No meat. Value in traffic? Pah. Where's the value in boring/frustrating your audience, with articles that serve no real purpose other than low quality traffic stats for... boring.

Surely I'm not alone?

Alex

You're right.

Manufacturers should be harnessing fans and motoring enthusiasts. As advocates. And to co-create (to some extent) new cars.

There are bits of this at times. But manufacturers remain rooted in "goods-dominant logic" -- a mindset that prioritises product and sales (ie: push) over customer experience (ie: pull).

See there-in lies the problem. The Audi is trying to play catch up but it will always be trying.

911 is a better everyday sports car, and with two small seats and more practical. The F4xx is no less practical than an R8, and both a Ferrari and 911 can be used everyday (been there, done that on both).
As far as reliability is concerned that is no longer an argument. Modern Italian cars as just as reliable and the biggest killer to the reliability of any car is not using it.

If I was to spend £100k (min) on a new 2 seater sports car it would not have an Audi badge on it. Plenty of F430’s available for that money or increase the budget to a F458. With that you are guaranteed to make every journey special. Isnt that what these cars are all about?

Annoying, isn't it. I hope this new technology can avoid zapping the eyeballs of people on foot, and getting in the eyes of people in cars pulling out of junctions (where only the (unlit) side of the car is presented, and they're possibly in the brighter part of the dipped beams' range too).

Just think what it will be like in 10-15 years time when people are driving around with their laser lights misaligned and the sensors broken smile

saw a demo of the matrix laser lights at CES, similar to the Audi advert with them on and I was mega impressed with the way they operate, definitely the way for the future, but that being said I reckon if a minor part fails in the system theyll be a)mega pricey to sort and/or b)a nightmare for dazzling on coming drivers

I see this will still remain the "if I had the money I would spend it elsewhere sort of car".

and that goes for me too smile

Forget the headlights, I hope they left the "day-lights" wire easy to cut, frickin things...

do you get prosecuted for shining them in the eyes of oncomers like you do when using a laser pointer at other cars or aircraft?
