For me those pictures just highlight what a great design the F1 was and how fussy the P1 looks in comparison.

I thought it was interesting how many cues there are from the F1 in the P1 - I had never noticed before. To be it looks like a bang-up-to-date version of the F1 utilising everything that has been learned about how to make a car go quickly in years that have passed in between.

Is it me, or does the P1 look like it has a really smug grin going on??

It reminds me of Jeremy clarkson when he has won a TG challenge

Cynics on here need to rethink their comments. This is a Supercar from a british manufacturer which has used a racing livery from the F1 on a brand new P1 to illustrate how cars have moved on and how "aero" has influenced the design. The catty comments are IMHO uncalled for. It's alright for the Porsche 918 to be Martini-ed so why not the Harrods livery. Aston and Ford have shown cars in the Gulf livery, but of course McLaren should be circumcised for daring to do the same. The continuing drivel and cynicism whenever McLaren shows a new version or admits address teething problems with their cars seems to bring people who could never afford one out in a rash. Try a different site boys critique is fine but moaning is so........girly.

McLaren really have things nailed down these days and are leading the way.

Good to see a GREAT British brand bringing out fantastic product like this and the 650S

Putting the GREAT back into Britain

Very nice.

I'm not exactly sure why I like that face so much more on the P1 than the 650S, but I do.

I'm sorry, but for me to have my cynicism removed it needs to actually have racing pedigree. It looks good and I'm sure it is an excellent piece of engineering, but they've sullied the GTR name for me.

As an aside, is there actually a current race series that would take it, since GT1 has died?
Did the F1 GTR have any pedigree prior to the name being adopted?

Race

When F1 GTR was launched it was as a race car. GTR on a road car which will likely never race (and it needs to race BEFORE the road variant gets that moniker) is as stupid as Ferrari and their 599 GTO. A badge special with no racing history.

They could have called that 599 Scuderia and it would have been fine. But nono to GTO

I'm with the original poster. P1 GT would have been fine. Even P1 GTX or even dafter P1 Team Edition. wink But GTR is because race car and must always be!

As for the Harrods livery. Makes no odds to me on this mock up. Though you'd think they would use the Ueno Clinic colours since that was the car that actually won in 95.

SEXUAL!

Not bad.

Re Central position. I heard a rumour that it was because Murray had patented it himself was back in the late 80s. How true that is I have no idea.

Huh? It's a track only car, not a road car. It will race, just not in a more "competitive" series. If you're going to have a problem with the name it should be the Grand Turismmo part surely?!

Circumcised?! Is that part of the weight loss programme for the drivers?

Did Gordon patent weight savings as well? Because it's almost hundred kgs heavier than the homologated One:1 and several hundred kilos heavier than the track versions from Zonda, Ferrari and Glickenhaus. It's just barely lighter than a run of the mill 458.

To call it a GTR isn't just a misnomer, it's a downright insult. Lets hope it's a misprint and they meant to say 500 kgs of weight savings. wink

Mock up ? who's said anything about it being a mock up ?

Re Central position patent, I'm pretty sure thats not true, maybe Land Rover already hold it.

Absolutely this. I know you've put your money where you mouth is, I wish I could too. I'd have a 12C in a heartbeat if I had the folding. Have to make do with my little Caterham until I can afford the 12C.

Enjoy your Great British car in the best of health. smile

Will it actually race though. Even in a one make series for P1's? Honestly I can't imagine that it will. I don't believe Ferrari "race" their FXX cars in the FXX Championship. Just take them to the track for you and let you blast around all day, and keep it running for you.

GT is a standard road car term, so not quite the same. At least Nissan GTR does have a race variant (and was in the JGTC before the road version were available)
They could have done a 12c GTR and that would have been fine since the car is out there racing every weekend. Called it a GT3 which is also fine IMO

It's all semantics I grant you. But I expect higher of McLaren. They are pretty good at cars after all. Not so much naming.

G T RACEbiggrin and unless they suddenly mange to get P1 GTR through (any) homologation regs to make it available to race in a series somewhere. Then I'll be all smiles. But until then it's just a faster track day version biggrin

Slight tangent but think M3. Every M3 has a racing version out there. But on the X6M. The M is not motorsport, but marketing. And it sucks!

PH, purity of naming matters!

Looks a lot like a Render rather than a photo of an actual car to me.

Sacrilege to mention this car in the same paragraph as the FXXK. The Ferrari is leagues above the P1 in looks, sound and performance.

Couldn't care less what they call it, there's got to be more important things in life to worry about. What I don't quite understand is this. You can only buy the GTR if you already own a road going version. Now you have the GTR it surely immediately renders the track setting of the road car completely useless. It's illegal for the road so you can't use it there and you won't need it for the track now either as you've got a far better version designed specifically for the job in hand. I wonder if they could now develop a road only version for those with the GTR and how much weight they could save if any and what improvements could be made to the on road ride and handling if the package no longer had to be a compromise.

looks like the McLaren design language is finally starting to mature into something coherent. It's a ways off and certainly nowhere near as tidy as the Ol' F1 was right out of the box, but they're starting to show signs of understanding the shapes that they made. I've always loved how the rear was so curvaceous and was still all about business with all those naked gubbins. The side panels are still weird, but the nose efforts are gradually harmonizing.
