RE: Shed Of The Week: Subaru Legacy GTB

I had a '99 model one of these. Went like stink, way faster than my abilities, lovely car, burbly when you're not in a hurry, roary snorty when you are.
35mpg is a joke, though. Even driving on eggshells I couldn't do better than 27.5mpg. And the insurance costs were ruinous. The Audi S8 I got to replace it (nowhere near as good to drive, by the way) cost half as much to insure.

There are loads of posts on Uklegacys on the vacuum issue - Mine had it and I refurbed the solenoid box (snake box!) myself in about an hour and it cured the issue... Cracking cars, wet or dry... I only saw about 17mpg in mine though on average and in 3rd gear on the secondary turbo, it it amazing how quickly you get into 3 figure speeds! I would have another in a heart beat and was only saying to SWMBO the other night, that I wished I still had mine...

In what world does this not have the "council image" of the Impreza? At least the Impreza is an iconic car...
I don't know what the image is like now, but when I had Legacies (early-mid 2000s) most people didn't seem to know what they were, so they were much more of a Q-car than a bespoilered sonic blue Impreza (to take an example at random). They also didn't seem to attract aggressive behaviour from other road users, people trying to race or cut you up, or the same TWOCing interest. For me, it was arguably a better all-round car (90% of the performance in a more liveable package) which was cheaper and less hassle to run.teacake said:

Not a bad point actually. Strangely enough I was following one of these last night through a not so good area and it was lowered on its backside and had ridiculous exhaust probably waking everyone up at 11pm. Funny how things like that can immediately change your perception of something.TNH said:

That's the sort of thing that makes me want to rescue the poor car... ;-)teacake said:

Mine is a 2002 and usually does 30-32 on the open road, I tend to average around 26-27 in mixed use. The temptation is always there to use more though, 3rd gear overtaking just feels so right.I've had it for about 6 years and put 54k miles on it, aside from planned servicing etc the only thing that has needed doing was replacing a faulty MAP sensor, which cut me to half boost for a while.
Seeing as everyone else is posting photos of theirs...
