Originally it was a Ford LTD Country Squire (though quite heavily made up for the film - National Lampoon's Vacation in case you're wondering) and the closest related saloon was the LTD sedan.

The worst estates are IMO the ones where they didn't change the rear door/window/c pillar from the equivalent saloon and it just looks like an after thought.

Having one of these as my current shed I'd be inclined to agree, quite a shame as the hatchback is a really good looking car IMO.

I really like the SAAB 9-5 estate too, can't decide whether I prefer it over the saloon though.
