What Lotus/Porsche/Jag could you get for £40k?

I don't really see the point in getting to worked up about the weight.

If its presumably there to make it structurally sound and safe, that's fine by me.

By all accounts it drives well, its hardly slow, and is reasonably frugal, so again all sounds good.

Yes, its fairly expensive, but all cars are these days - the only downside for me is it looks a little frumpy, but I think the coupe does as well - but it's not a disaster by any means.

Sensible response.

In answer to who buys these things I suspect it is more a case of who will lease these.... there are companies quoting coupe prices at around £350>450pm

I agree with most of this.

I think it would be interesting to see exactly what weighs what in these cars though and through that get an idea of exactly where the weight comes from. Does it come from all the heavy kit that customers want like electric seats and good stereos or does it come from making it safer?

Found out last week they also make a 2 series with 7 seats... I may well be wrong but there can't be many models which have a 2 seat and a 7 seat variant!
That would be mental - but the 2 series 7 seater is called a Gran Tourer and is sadly a 4 door. And not in any way related to a 2 series!

It's called the 2 series "Active Tourer" and it's the first BMW to be based on a transverse engined FWD platform, known internally as the UKL (Untere Klasse) platform, or Low Class platform. Sounds better in German, I think.

It means entry-level/compact, and fits with the traditional classification structure in DE, or rather the Ober- (7er), Mittel- (5er), Kompakt-/Unterklassen (1er).

What's the 3er then?

No, I think it means low class.

£40,000! Way too much IMO. 435i is only £45,000

I'm sure it will sell well but it still looks as awkward as other "after thought" type cabriolets out there.

Yes, but a 435i cabrio is also not an entertaining driver's car.

Plus, a quick glance at a broker site tells me that a manual M235i cabrio can be yours discounted for £34k. Even chucking all the options at it you could possibly want only gets you to just shy of £40k.

If you stop focussing on it being a 2-series, and focus instead on what it offers as a package, that doesn't seem bad to me.

OK, so the £40k needs to be stretched a little bit, but worth it to get one of these....

£49k gets a F type Coupe
£55k gets an F Type Convertible
£49k Gets a Boxster S
£37k Gets a Boxster
£55k gets an Evora

All of these are list price, admitedly none are 2+2 convertibles. On looks alone the 2 series would not get a look in for my money, and they actually look better in the photos than real life.

Not sure if you were considering a £35k 2 Series (after discount) that you would also be looking at a £55k Evora...

But has there ever been a 4 seat convertible that doesn't make you look like a knob with the roof down?
