No lights? well just don't bother engaging anyway as you just know he's an idiot before you start - natural selection will take it's course eventually but doubtless his unfortunate nemesis will be done for driving without due care etc...

Even as a fair weather commuting cyclist I run with blinking lights and hi viz whenever light is fading - and even then have been painfully hit by a wingmirror from a dozy bint driving an emormous beamer (stopped a few hundred yards further on & got out to check for damage - moved away pretty sharpish when she twigged I was approaching fast) and I've had many many close shaves leading to the odd exchange of views.....

As a cyclist - yes I do engage in "constructive criticism" with the odd driver - who will invariably (if over 30) apologise.....
As a driver - not really worth pursuing unfortunately....just pass in the highest gear possible with foot flat on the gas - normally ensures my ageing turbodiesel emits a satisfactory cloud of horrors...

Christ... that was quick...ish. (He'd be quicker on a racer with a carbon frame.)

Why didn't you just overtake him?
Lack of space - rush hour. wink
Not sure if you're thinking the same thing I am... where is the OP's post complaining about the thousands of car drivers getting in his way and stopping him from overtaking a single bicycle?

These 2 quotes are just Karma in action laugh

In summary (As many say above)

Roads are for everyone, so if the person in front is not breaking the law. Tough titties.
No lights in the dark is stupid for both cars and cyclists.
Crap drivers or riders doesn't make the other 99% of drivers or riders out there who are generally fine responsible for 1 dick.
Don't act the big man just cause your in your metal box.
How crap a driver are you if you can't safely negotiate a bicycle?

I beeped at a lycra cyclist who jumped a red in front of me today, I got a massive shock, he apologised. Last time I did that I got a middle finger and "fk off".

I tend to see the same people driving into work at my local commuting time. There are a few dozen cyclists that I see, 99% of them are absolutely fine, there are only two cocks that try and take over the road. Then again, I see plenty of cars that drive like idiots as well (including the tt who decided not to let me out of a side junction in traffic, but instead sit on the wrong side of the road blocking all traffic so he didn't have to let me out).

Strangely enough on my local commute more motorcyclists don't say thanks when I let them pass or get out of the way, than cyclists.

I harbour no ill will to any road user (except that tt) and am a big fan of live and let live. In the same way I've seen cyclists bunny hop onto the kerb to get out of the way of traffic, I've often paused at a narrow speed calming zone to let cyclists through before resuming my journey. I can appreciate it's a lot more effort to go from 15-2-15mph on a cycle than it is for me to go from 30-26-30 in a car.

I've seen loads of tts in vehicles lately either with no lights on or just side lights when it's dark.

Should one engage these fools?

I did once stop and ask an old duffer on a country road, in the dark who I "saw" every morning at the same time, probably heading out to milk cows or something, whether he would like me to buy him some lights and a hi viz coat as I genuinely feared for his safety from other road users.

I can't remember the exact response, but I was not taken up on my kind offer.

After that I used to go past and shout "get some lights you tt"

Oh how we laughed.

I cycle in the dark and I'm fking paranoid about tts in cars.

If a cyclist is causing danger, tell them. If they're being inconsiderate, tell them. Do it politely.

It won't often help in practical terms, but the reaction can be instructive.

Use your horn continuously until he moves out of your way.
If he hasn't got any lights on then don't cut him any slack

What have the other people en route done wrong, that they have to listen to all that horn?

PistonHeads wold not be complete without 1 or 2 active threads on cyclists vs motorists.

I recognise some of the comments made so far, pretty sure some are just copied and pasted from the last time we did this.
The interesting aspect is that over time, through these threads, you do begin to understand that an awful lot of people in cars are monumental, self serving, low witted choppers at best and at worst quite deeply damaged and in need of some kind of therapy for their issues.

You mean the type of person that parks in a P & C space without kids in the car?

I engaged with a cyclist last year when he crashed into the back of my parked car. Does that count?

One of the usual suspects will be along shortly to explain how it was your fault.

If you insist, although I find it a claim hard to believe.
