I have a Mk2, had it since new 4 years ago and 105k miles. it's been a reliable car, i blew the turbo seals but that was my own fault really pushing the boost to 21psi, so using my man logic i bought a GTX turbo and the car is now running around 380bhp. It's a lot of fun.
I was thinking about replacing it but everything so far has been a bit dull in comparison, had an M135i for a day but it just felt slooow and boring, hoping the Focus RS will be more fun as it has a reworked MPS engine.

You do need to do a few mods that make a massive difference, a remap, not just for the extra peak power but also to remove the limiters under 60mph and stop the power falling off a cliff above 5.5krpm, load of options now and quite cheap too. Also need a rear engine mount and some better springs, maybe a turbo inlet pipe.

If you could find another £1000 you will have a 320bhp car that will be good fun. I remember reading a decent write up in a motor mag some years ago and i liked their statement of the car being for a hooligan with a family, sums it up in 1 sentance.
I've read about the initial gains with just a few mods. That's what id be aiming for, 300/320ish would be awesome for me.

Sorry if this is completely wrong:

Having recently had an abs control module failure in an octavia (£820 bill) I was lead to believe that the exact same unit was fitted to the mazda 3s of this age.

I like the mps, especially the mk2. They are discrete.
Not heard that the ABS control is shared with an Octavia, never heard of an ABS control failure on an MPS. The MPS shares a fuel pump with VAG, same as in GTI/R but as far as i know that's the only bit, a few parts are shared with Focus ST though.

I'm not trying to purposefully put people off here. I just think that it is criminal that so many cars of this era have major parts like this, that are safety related that can go wrong and cost so much to put right.

Skoda UK couldn't have cared less when mine gave up. I have sold my skoda and was considering a mazda 3 as the mrs has a mazda 2 and likes it.

Maybe an after market warranty might be the answer?

Honest john:

Problems with Dynamic Stability System on Mazda 3s more than 4 years old. Up to 75% goodwill may be available from Mazda, bringing the cost of replacement down to around £350. Seems to be suffering the same TEVES Mk 60 ABS/ESP "boost pressure sensor G201" fault at 3 - 4 years old as on Golfs, Tourans, Leons, Alteas, Toledos, Octavias, BMW 1 Series, BMW 3 Series, Peugeot 407s, and Volvo S40s/V50s. Fault code is C1288.
