I was filing some new insurance documents last night for the 535, I found the key ring and key my Dad gave me on my 17th birthday almost 30 years ago.

The key was for his 1982 X reg E21 316. Henna red. He insured me from my 17th and taught me to drive in it. I drove that car as a named driver for a decade all through sixth form and university, and on occasions when I visited them once I'd moved to London. He kept it for 17 years.

He's gone now, as is the car, but what a lovely thing to keep with me all day.

Save me a seat at the bar, Dad.

Lovely thing to find, but good grief, did the '316 - M Design' plague start back in eighties?

To you? £1,000,000,000?

I bet with his assistance you got some right crumpet/totty/girls etc with the car biggrin
Ha!

Sadly I was an ugly child rofl

Not even 90bhp, steel wheels, winding windows, a blaupunkt radio and beige cloth seats could make up for that!

Yeah it did have them - different sizes unlike the 320 and 323.

MOT ran out in 2008. Cry.

Lovely.
I was going to suggest that might have been the reason for your lack of success with the girls !!
That shape was incredible looking, red really suited it too.

My father had a lot more style and class than I ever will.

Plain 316 badge and the dealer sticker removed from the back windscreen.

No purple 911?? ;-)

That's a nice car to have as a 17 year old.

All credit to you for not writing it off....unlike my friends son whos 318i lasted him 3 weeks before ending up in a shallow stream....stupid boy!

PDL 214X My dads BMW 316 bought in 1983 and he insured it for me to drive when I had just passed my test at 17 years old in the same year. As per the OP, they are both long gone now, but I will always remember him passing me the keys for my first solo drive in it.

He told me that after I went out on my own for the first time he had a triple whisky.

Rather nice story for a Friday morning! But, as this is PH, I feel obliged to ask you if you have any pictures of the car?

There's something about BMW's of that era that keeps me thinking about buying one. I can't pinpoint exactly what though.

I 100% agree with this. I'm 32 so the BMs from the 80s really appeal to me a lot, something about the front end, those twin headlights and styling. Think they evoque memories of my childhood and watching them race in touring cars etc.

Very touching story OP thanks for sharing such a personal memory.

Soov, that made me smile, a lot smile

I remember from posts of yours in the past, that your Dad meant a great deal to you, so I'm pleased you found the keyring and I can imagine how it makes you feel.

Yes agree completely! The twin headlight set up and my dads had a black front spoiler which was quite rare then. The sound of the carb wide open on top of the straight six is something I will never forget. Dad and his ol BM long gone now.... He went without knowing what his 18 yr old son put his pride and joy through!
