To me, it looks like a lower spec R8, with the higher version having the full side blades, and this level having the abbreviated side blades.

Looks fine to me, but definitely not better.

I must say I like it!

Many people have said it's bland or boring.
Perhaps some were expecting gen 2 to be as revolutionary for Audi as the first R8?

My opinion is they have improved on the look of the original. It was popular, so why radically stray too far away from a proven design formula?
Audi's exterior design with the R8 has been subtle improvement - like Porsche did with the 911 or Aston Martin with, well any post-2004 Aston.

I would assume it is under the skin where much of the improvement is - we'll have to wait for comparisons from journos or owners who upgraded.

I like the look (apart from the split side blade) - the lower blade would look fine on its own.
I don't like S-tronic only gearbox.

The interior is much improved, the older tech the outing going car was the only part which really aged it (not that it would bother me, mind!).

It will be interesting to see how residuals of the old R8 will hold.
Are manual cars likely to hold there value? Perhaps they will be forgotten as "old fashioned".

Some say they like it, others call it bland - I'm sure Audi will sell bucket loads!

Couldn't disagree more with people here. I love the original and I think this looks crap. Certainly a backwards step in terms of design.

Who approved that?

Lets get rid of the distinctive features and do nothing innovative or exciting with the design. Even compared to a porsche this looks bland and unimaginative.

Immense step backwards in terms of looks. I can only hope they have been more creative with the rest of the car

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that the over-stylised images in the article makes the car look more boring than it really is. A decent metallic paint colour and some natural lighting and I bet it looks a lot better.

I always found it odd how my RS3 shares the same steering wheel as the old R8. Glad they've changed that, even if they've only added a couple of buttons.

It get's my vote. Let's hope it doesn't have the uncomfortable chairs of the Huracan. The lack of Lamborghini dealers in the UK also influences my vote. Where would you get your Huracan serviced living in Cornwall? I hope they offer a factory collection option.

Really liked the first gen R8 and it's aged really well, not so sure about this tbh it just doesn't look like a super car.

I have always hated the shouty sideblades, like high heels on a pensioner. In body colour a lot more subtle or just wrapped to keep spec correct. If the rear is so bad be careful when you look at the rear of the "new" Evora you'll need a sick bag!
I hope the E- tron version has a chain mail grille then maybe they'll do an Alfa 4C-( retro fit the Spyders headlights).
Yeah one with the E-Tron grille. Can a cleverer person than me do a Photoshop please?

This is an abomination onto the Lord . What on earth is that rear? The rear 3/4 looks a mess.

Prefer to see one in the flesh before commenting on looks but it will drive brilliant and the v10 just sounds fantastic, I don,t think you get viewed as a plonker driving around town in one of these compared to a Ferrari maybe it,s viewed as more attainable ?

What he said - that looks like the old car has gained a bit of weight and is squinting...

Audi will sell loads tho - there's a sucker in every dealer...

There's a A6 Estate in the local dealer right now in Baby Blue - yes, really, Baby Blue - it's not for-sale, it's a customer car - and yes, it's EVERY bit as hideous as you're imagining - only worse...

Quite like the styling. The big new grille finally works here. It looks out of place on the rest of the Audi range IMO.

Saves me typing this out, I completely agree.

Wow, I think they've outdone Porsche in the "evolutionary styling" game! That said, I've always been a fan of the original R8, so I find the new one quite nice, as well.

I suppose there's no more V8-engined R8?

Its a nice Audi, mate !

Couldn't tell you which one they all look the same. Go buy a proper Supercar as it will work out a darn site cheaper once you factor in the depreciation on these

All that jazz

This will age really badly imho, just like the A5 has. The rear of it already has an 80s/90s look to it - too slab-like and too much unnecessary plastic. The proportions are all wrong at the front too. Previous one had just the right balance but this one is too wide with too much bonnet and too much plastic mesh bumper adorned with stupidly small headlights which makes it look completely ridiculous. I quite liked the original R8 but this is a mess.

For those saying that the car was always going to be revolutionary, it didn't have to be as Audi could have allowed themselves more freedom with the R8. Porsche with the 911 have set themselves an unfortunate precedent where they are always committed to this evolutionary approach because it has been going for so long, but when the R8 was launched it was truly revolutionary in its looks and many paid the top dollar purchase price because they loved its space age looks and the fact it was easy to live with. But now with this second gen car, it has lost that shock-n-awe design USP, which makes it harder to stomach the £100k plus entry point. The BMW i8 ironically is the new R8 in the desire stakes.

MyCC.

I've never thought of the R8 as 'Space Age'. One of the attractions of the original to me is it could seem an evolution of the mid engined supercar done by Audi.

The jokes about the Peugeot RCZ being the Aldi TT? I'm quite pleased the R8 is a rehashed Gallardo.

The new Hurracan is angle sensitive in looks, and I'm not sure the rear end is too good on that either, so both the Hurracan and new R8 could seem to have unexceptional rumps, not something that I am sure can be changed by bunging an aerofoil on.

The original R8 looks better just as the Gallardo is far more pleasing to the eye than the Hurracan IMO.
