Please tell me this bks terminology isn't catching on.
Someone posted up 2 weeks ago about "hyper hatch"
It is all bks. There is no such thing - and never will be.

A sooped up shopping wagon - however prestigious will only ever be "hot hatch"
I want a hyper snotter to drive down a super highway.
Preferably a Diesel, so I could have lots of torques...laugh

What do you mean it doesn't have a hatch?

Who cares, it looks like it should anyway.

Is that more of a Supercoupe than a Hyperhatch?

Whats sad is that all the cars pictured are 5 door, imho hot hatches should be 3 door.
What if you have children? Or friends? One thing that really wound me up when I got a Type R back in 2004 was everytime someone got in the back the seat reset it's self, plus the longer doors are a pita when trying to get out in a car park.
They've always been around though, 5 door hot hatches - Delta HF Turbo, Astra GTE, Golf GTi, Visa GTi - 30 years back

I had an Audi S1 on a 5 day extended test drive last week. Absolutely awesome bit of kit. Very fast, sticks to the road, reasonably fuel efficient, very well kitted out, and reasonably priced. I hoping it'll be my next company car.

What why no 320bhp RWD m135i? ;-)
Sorry, didn't realise it had that much power. It's hardly a brand new model though and I think it's fugly and too cramped in the back and boot. I quite like the M235i though (but that's not a hatch)!
Let me get this straight: the 1-series is too ugly to be included in your self-defined category of "hyper hatch" but you're including the utterly vile Civic?

I'm no fan of the 1-Series' looks, but you must need some new glasses if the Civic is 'in', with those aesthetics...

Hyper hatch is such a naff term.

However, of the modern crop of hot hatches I'd love an A45 AMG.

Had one on load for a 24hour test drive, took it back after an hour.

Gruff engine, gearbox that is constantly changing all the time and rock hard suspension.

I hated it, but each to their own.

RS3 just for the noise smile

but probably the original skunkworks one as the new one potentially could be "sanitised" and therefore dull and a play station experience like the A45

1. Civic Type R
2. Focus RS
3. M135i

- The new shape A3 is horrible inside and incredibly uncomfortable. So the RS3 would be a no from me.
- The AMG is pretty ugly, and the blue thye all seem to be in is a terrible colour...thaty yellow one is the best I have seen though.

The Civic looks the best to my eyes and will no doubt perform very well too.

But overall......I'd buy a new V8 Mustang biggrin

You'd need to be a hyperblinger to drive that.

I think "hyperhatch" is a useful term, and I think there is an analogy with hypercars. Largely a matter of pub bore numbers and excess, rather than being aimed at driving pleasure (which a true hot hatch must be - see the Fiesta ST or the hot Renaults, for example).

I couldn't even contemplate spending that kind of money on a car with a 4-pot engine with the turbo cranked up, so I would have to go for the M135i (assuming that is powerful enough to meet the criteria). If not, then a 5-pot Audi - I would have to tolerate the lifeless steering to at least get a pleasant engine.

At one point Autocar was doing one of their top five lists alongside the road test data as "Mega Hatches". That was at the time things like the Focus RS mk2 or the Megane R26.

Is a hyper hatch even faster than a mega hatch?

My next car will be something like this I imagine as it fits my usage needs perfectly. I know as far as PH is concerned that makes me Wrong, but hey ho.

Out of the OP's list I'd probably wait round for the Focus RS or see if VW ever do a hotter Golf R.

The Audi, judged on previous efforts, will promise much and deliver little.
