I'm just hypothetically pondering the question, it's not a situation I'm in myself. - you have 5-7k to spend on a car which you have to drive to a job interview in, where you'll be parking it in front of the window the interviewers look out of.

what do you buy? what car looks classy / subtle and is difficult to criticise, and also helps you look like you earn more than you do, given the low purchase price?

I'd say a clean late model Saab.

Lexus of some sort?

Scare enough on the roads that with a personalised plate most people wouldn't recognise it as being an "old" shape, and not the latest model. Polish the st out of it before turning up of course!

The challenging bit being "look like you earn more than you do"... smart and presentable on that budget is easy enough. Any Merc, Audi, BMW, etc. is going to just look like an old model to most people.

I would not work anywhere where they considered the vehicle attending interview was part of the process

Depends on the job, but most VW such as Golf or Passat that has been washed and waxed will cover most bases.

Depends on the job really and the associated salary. Wouldn't get very far in an Aston for all the work I've been in, they'd just think I was filling my time.

Volvo V70 or a Subaru Legacy - totally classless and under the radar.

My point was keep the money in the pocket.
And hire the appropriate car.

If they don't like cars it's a respectable diesel Volkswagen and if they do it's a V10 luxury machine.

+1, or a Saab. Classy enough to appear financially stable and comfortable, but not so showy it looks like you don't need/want the job.
And of course, you don't want to turn up in a car better than the interviewer because you're automatically screwed.

You should turn up in something like this, the bonus being it's only £4000 so you have spare change while continuing the job hunt.

Alternatively if you want to scare them into giving you the job this would work.
