I remember the old cruise days with the likes of Max Power and Fast Car magazine.

To be honest they were generally fairly harmless apart from the odd Nova driving like a plank. Some of the cars looking back were just awful but of their era. Personally I just drove a couple of Clios with uprated audio and alloys not the Jap style Renault 5's you used to see.

As for the women, yeah there was always a few ropey old bints who couldn't resist whipping out their funbags at the sight of a Golf doing a burnout. It just seems that the women in skimpy clothes went in hand with the cars, obviously a lot less common nowadays but I'm sure it still happens.

Funny thing is there were two types of women at cruises, the ones half naked and the proper petrolheads turning up in cars to rival any of the 'lads'.

Hahaha, what a blast from the past. Max Power, Redline, Fast Car, Revs. This is why I ended up with a Saxo VTR in the garage at 16 (to "encourage" me to pass my test).

I also threw out my collection when I moved out, its pretty cringe now but im so glad I grew up with that scene, it got me into cars. Seems like more people were into cars back then - im always happy to see the rare occasion one of the younger lads at work get something noisy that his insurers wont like.

Ahhh the good old days when you could have an mr2 turbo at 19 without having to sell your organs.

I totally agree, it was a really fun time for car fans and especially for the 'youths' haha

The 'scene' for young drivers now is far more serious in terms of fitting. It seems that everything has to be ridiculously low otherwise it's not credible. If it's not a static drop again it's less credible because air bags are clearly for girls. It's so much more about conforming to what is considered an in look where as back in the day it was more about being as far out and different as possible.

Now when you see show cars comparable to those back in 2003, instead of giant wheels and 'ICE' they're now minimalist in terms of styling but are essential crippled by their own suspension set up!

When max power was in its prime I was a bit too young to drive but I bought every mag religiously. I for one wish that sort of scene would come back, back when everyone just did what they wanted to their cars not what everyone on instagram thinks you should do

'tiz my considered opinion that the reason for the 50 limit and average speed cameras on the A127, 20 limit on Southend sea front and most of the other cameras around town is that there were a huge amount of knobbers driving around in souped up Ford Escorts and crashing often most of which were Max Power and Revs readers.

I remember the night England beat Germany 1-0 in Euro 2000 and we all barrelled into my mate's white fiesta, 5 up, all well over 6ft, and went down Southend Seafront for a celebratory drive. We weren't the typical Max Power type, but it was a hilarious night. Absolute carnage and impossible not to have a shunt when one of Essex's finest jumps on your bonnet and whips them out.

That was my one foray into the world of cruising and I can see why the A127 and the seafront have been locked down. It was mental.

If you've seen the thread on "Badly Modified Cars" or "Well modified cars" on here. You'll be well aware how people get properly snotty if a car isn't to a their specific ideals or look.

I wonder if my generation, that grew up with MP, Revs and Fast Car are more tolerant of the more silly modifications that people do these days on their cars. I wouldn't drive a Polo with alloys touching the arches on even the slightest bump. But I don't get all righteous like some on here about how they've "ruined the car or made it un-driveable" I just think, at least they are into cars. I try to appreciate all mods regardless of whether it's my ideal. (Obviously some ARE ste) But remember the quote.

"Give kids a car habit, and they wont be able to afford a drug habit" biggrin

I regularly post in those threads saying each to their own etc

Being 25 I'd assume everyone my age would be mad into cars or modding but sadly it seems to be a dying trend

I have a friend who, despite having a good career, a manual 996, a 997 cabrio and a Mitsubishi Evo 1 rally car, thinks after a few pints that the phone box outside our local is the Tardis, and where in time we should go with our other friends. My latest answer was, to 2002, buy a 1986 Escort RS Turbo, and go to Max Power cruises. The idea of going back to 1985 and buying Apple stock has been done already .

Is probably dead.

Redline was better if you were into the more technical aspects, I then graduated on to evo mag till Harris and Harry left.

I think the last scene trend I recall is vw with stretched tyres, that must be some 5 years ago now, what are they doing now?

It’s all drifting now. Japanese coupes with huge side skirts and lip kits or anything old/accessible RWD in general. The neon coloured wheel trend has died thankfully but to be honest, so has car culture as everyone can get into something fairly nice for £400pm and it’s all about Instagramming how they’ve “made it”. That seems to be the current trend, getting into a 420d at 18yrs old.

Regretfully no topless ladies are interested in draping over a 420d frown.

Aged about 17, I once hid a copy of Max Power under a copy of Razzle when paying for it, it was that embarrassing.

The fast and the furious got me into cars. In particular, the bridge jump scene followed almost immediately by the women.

Red line was cringy even at the time. I remember some awful creations, but with all the naked women around who cared. It was also full of ads for downloadable phone ringtones. Good times!
