Something with huge range and a full tank to be able to get to the North North of Scotland without stopping - you won't be able to buy fuel.

Something quick.

Something very very solid for going through checkpoints under power.

Something with superb Nav system with realtime traffic.

I'm not sure that that nav system would serve you very well following a nuclear blast.

do we think the roads would be blocked? if so how realistic is it going off road to devon ( from oxfordshire ) or at least just to avoid the jams

So if I keep a spare coil, set of points and a condenser in a lead lined box (to be fitted after an atomic blast) my car will be OK?

Cool.

If anyone wants a post-nuclear war lift I am prepared to discuss 'terms'.

Mind you, I suppose petrol station pumps are vulnerable to an EMP event (and of course to the blast/thermal shock produced by a nuke) and so I'd have to find a way to extract fuel from underground tanks - I'm guessing that there is some sort of vent you could use? I could always nick fuel from incapacitated cars… must make sure I've got enough lead replacement additive to keep me going. The UK may have been decimated in a nuclear exchange with Ivan, but that is no excuse to stop worrying about valve seat recession.

This site allows you to input your location and then find out how the various sizes of nuclear warheads would effect you... doesn't half kill a bit of time when you're bored at work (as I am).

Thinking about it, unless it was a very high altitude airburst (in which case the EMP effect affects a much larger area), I think your car not working would be the least of your worries if you were close enough to be affected.

Due to the EMP you'd need an old mechanical diesel.

But you would probably be better off on a boat or on foot.

if the russians bombed us I'd probably want to leg it to devon to see my folks and hide out.
You know there were a couple of Russians bombers just off the Cornish coast a couple of weeks back? biggrin

Should be fine. Being switched off helps, any metal box helps, absence of long pieces of wire helps.

There is nowhere to hide in Devon... you'll just die there. Any car is waste of time I'm afraid.

10 minutes later your be on your way back due to the f-ing midges. Rather die in a nuclear blast than live with midges.

also fuel wise it;s easier as diesel is often stored above ground as is heating oil
