Carb NA diesel because it's utterly unburstable and easy to mend.

Skip the landy and the VW, nip down the the local MB dealer and collect one of these for an apocalyptic testdrive:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unimog#mediaviewer/Fi...

has a 240 litre fuel tank according to wikipedia in the LWB, that's got to get a fair way off road.

Thanks for the reminder about threads, watched that on youtube a while back, oddly good and before you know it your stocking up extra beans on the weekly supermarket run

Older 2.4d hilux with the mechanical rotary diesel pump and strapped on the back a honda off road bike with points, gerry cans and a shotgun. Go anywhere, on any fuel, hopefully Reliable , and a negotiation tool to procure any supplies needed to keep my family going.

That. Something classic and diesel. Less likely to have been killed, easier to find/make fuel for.

But, you'll only survive if you are already somewhere remote before the bombs land. In which case it'll be "Whatever works".

There will be no fuel, or food in the shops, or much of anything for that matter. Walking on foot towards the countryside, at night, tooled up with a machete for the win.

Peugeot 106 1.5d, literally bomb proof.

A friend had one and the rad burst, so he took it off and ran some pipe back round, lasted a year or so before he scrapped it

Have to agree there. The no.1 thing to do would be to get you and your group away from other people that will want to take anything useful from you. All the dheads you meet on a daily basis that do dhead things will turn into super duper dheads if society broke down. The riots in 2011 were a good indication of the mentality.
