Even before i learned to wash my car via 2 bucket method and all. Back when throwing the dirty bucket of water over the top was a great idea to finish cleaning, 1 sponge and 1 dip in the water to wash the full dirty car challenge, i never managed to do that type of damage. Isnt bmw paint really hard aswel? I bet they used they rubber water blades to remove the water and the grits scratched it all.

The most interesting bit is the fact that after £1050 worth of work they want £5 to wash your car!
Exactly what I was thinking, I'm always asked if I want my car hand washed FOC at my local bmw dealer, even when it was in for MOT last month, I always decline the offer as I always wash it myself

If it was handed over to you washed, how did you miss them?
It's a drive in bay with poor overhead lighting, even the service manager commented on the fact.

I was also in a rush because I was late to the Bedford SEN trackday the weekend before last. (Wasn't driving my car, just went as a passenger with some friends)

Let's hope the right outcome is realised; technically speaking, it's your responsibility after handover - IOW you accept the car after having checked its condition - added to this you say you washed it; the dealer could easily shrug this claim off IMO.

A few years ago I put my vxr in for a service to Arnold Clark. I stuck no less than 3 pieces of paper to the inside of the car saying 'PLEASE DO NOT WASH.' I also advised them verbally and they said that my request had been noted.

I returned to collect my car only to find they had washed it and scratched it. I then got my lawyer involved when they refused to admit liability and they subsequently coughed up for a partial respray.

I'm fairly confident it'll work out. The service manager said he'd be able to 'resolve' it.

On Friday he wants to clean it again, so when they do I'm going to request that I oversee it.

Any sort of sponge, chamois leather, TFR, dirty water or old cloths and I think they won't have that much of a defence.

I'm 21 so have decided to bring my dad down with me on Friday as he is also a loyal customer there and buys a car privately from them every 3 years or so. Hopefully with my recent spend and my previous work I've had done as well as his ongoing custom they'll act on it with 'good will'.

Fingers crossed.

I've documented it very well with a DSLR so we don't miss anything come the end of the week.

Sounds like a good dealer to me.. many would try to push back as technically difficult to prove they did it.

FWIW my daily hack only EVER got washed when it went in for a service at the dealer (4 year old £9k Prius), and I never had any issues. All the scratches on that car were my own (or my mates'!!) fault.

Thing is that when I picked the car up it was sat in very poor light, I drove straight out into the rain and drove 60 miles or so to Bedford, by which point it was dirty and I couldn't see the scratches.

Rest of the week was pretty dreadful weather and as soon as I washed it on Sunday I noticed them and called dealer first thing Monday.

I told him (service manage) all that and he appreciated that. I haven't and wouldn't give any BS to try and get my way.

Looks like they've used one of those silicone hydra blade things to do the initial drying...

Well, credit to the dealer as they have taken my car in today after speaking to them again and are going to machine polish the scratches out in the bodyshop. Spoke to the guy who will being doing it and he was confident it would be an easy job as he prepares the approved used cars all the time that are in similar situations.

All of this is FOC including a new Mini Cooper to knock around in for the day.

Picking the car up first thing tomorrow so hope they do a good job.

I hope this is the end, but I doubt it!

They must send cars out of there in great condition all the time. It's bound to go through this process now instead of the idiot given a bucket and pointed at it. Sounds like a good result.

My Leon Cupra went in years ago, I was like you with that car, always washed myself with care. Rear arch was fixed after a minor knock and the rest of the car came back covered in swirls. Got told they never touched the rest even though it went in dirty and came out clean. Fortunately came up well after a good polish.

And a black Volvo T5-R that was showing its age in the paintwork, got it machine polished and it broke down shortly after. Weird electric one so left it in a garage to be worked on when quiet to keep costs down. Saw it just before they fixed it covered in dust and bird mess, as I went in to pay they said "we've washed it and dropped it at your house" my face dropped when he said it, asked if they'd done it properly and said it had just been machine polished. Of course it was the worst wash I've ever seen and was worse than before, could have cried. They offered to polish it (not machine) but I was past trusting them and did it myself.

Fingers crossed this really is resolved for you but does sound positive.

I'm very particular with how I wash cars and know I wouldn't have scratched the car, especially as I carried out the same exact procedure as usual (pressure washed, wash mitts, two buckets, rinsed, microfibre drying etc)

Would you expect the dealer to right this FOC or play the blame game?
So am I which is why with anything other than my family bus if someone offers wash it for £5 I assume they get a Bulgarian immigrant or spotty teenager with a bucket of gravel and poundland paint stripper/wash and car plan wax.

Whenever I take my car in I ask them not to wash it and they look at me like I am completely mental.

Good luck OP, I hope it comes back looking good.
