Any suggestions of a car I can get that can do 0-60mph in under 7 seconds, is c £17k, no mods, and is fairly new (not older than 3 years)?

Lots. Subaru WRX STIs are now appearing in the dealer network for under £17k. I know, I just bought one. Less than two and a half years old but high miles for the age.

You'd also get into something like a BMW 335i if you wanted a bit more in the way of creature comforts, previous gen Golf R, all sorts at that money. What else do you need the car to do/be?

Four doors, big boot doesn't really matter, this will be my run around car as I have a main car that I will mostly use

Would be perfect but auto trader hasn't got one fast enough, 0-60's seem to be in 9 second range

Nearly new Fiesta ST3? Add the mountune kit and you'll be at around 6.4 seconds.

A brand new ST3 with metallic paint is only 16.5k. STick the mountune on for £600 and he's only £100 over budget smile

ST1 starts from 17,395, obviously some discount is expected, but you'll be doing well to get an ST3 and mountune kit at £17k.

Without privilege discount of course.

You have £17k to spend on a runaround/weekend/hoon car and a new Fezza is suggested!

(And he would prefer an auto)

Ye Gods!

Not saying its a good car but OP's criteria is pretty wide.

You can get ....

M3
XKR
M6
SLK 55AMG
Cayman Tip
996 Tip
Boxster Tip

for the same money.
Yers they will cost more to run but something like the Boxster or Cayman won't be ruinous.

Not sure which cars you've checked but they're not GTi's if they take 9 secs to 60!
First one I clicked on, 0-60 in 6.9 http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2015...

edit: that's a manual, but 0-60 for the DSG is the same.

Either autotrader is wrong or you're not looking at a golf gti. Manufacturer's time will be sub 7 seconds.

There was an St3 Fiesta which is a year old for 14,5 near me. I test drove it and loved it!
Mountune for 600, with £100 discount, which isn't a lot, 15k.
Had almost every option ticked aswell.
