Morgan - Geneva 2015

Aero 8 is back ... looking like exactly like it did before (no bad thing in our books)

Morgan going back to the old school isn't really a surprise. It's what the British sports car maker has been doing for most of its 106-year history. But now the company has reached into its more recent history for inspiration for the new Aero 8, which has just been unveiled at Geneva - the 1999 car of the same name.

The original Aero 8 was the first Morgan to use the combination of a bonded aluminium chassis and a BMW-sourced V8 engine, and spawned a series of increasingly mad-looking and expensive successors - including the AeroMax and Aero SuperSports. Now the company is taking things back to basics - apparently as the result of customer demand - with the new Aero 8 set to cost around £79,000 in the UK before options.

Styling is familiar-but-new, with the slightly myopic front headlight look that we've become used to but a new, longer rear deck that hinges at the back to reveal both a nicely trimmed luggage compartment, and a place for the hood to be invisibly stowed when folded (another first for Morgan.) An optional hardtop will also be sold, which turns the Aero into a decent impression of a coupe.

The fundamentals remain as before with a 367hp 4.8-litre BMW V8 charged with providing both rumble and howl and the choice of manual or automatic gearboxes. The chassis has been made stiffer than before and there's an all-new rear differential that's claimed to cut noise dramatically, and it's still impressively light - just 1,100kg 'dry' with the automatic gearbox.

From a driver's point of view the biggest change will be the slightly redesigned cabin, which still has a reassuring quantity of wood and leather, and especially the new, lower seats. These liberate a couple of inches of extra headroom and mean that, by Morgan standards, the Aero 8 feels positively spacious inside.

Morgan MD Steve Morris tells us that production will be limited to something between 300 and 350 cars, depending on demand.

Rear not doing it for me frown
Reminds me of those early to mid 2000s american cars such as the PT Cruiser and the weird Chevy pickup.

I love that. I love that it's got 3 windscreen wipers.

I'm not keen on the hardtop but it looks fabulous with the roof down. Probably the best looking sports car on the market, IMO.

That front-on pic at the top of the article is very unflattering.

I agree, the "turtle-back" boot is a bit "off". At the same time, I'm a huge Morgan fanboy and believe more Morgans can only be a good thing.

I'll never forget the first time I saw an Aero SuperSports. I was flabbergasted, to say the least, as it's quite a rare car in America.

In the interest of full-disclosure, yes, I do have a tweed cap and a handlebar moustache (and often a beard).

Still those lights. If they rotated them outwards by about 5 degress that would at least help.

Blooming lovely - one of the first cars on my shopping list come the imaginary Lottery win. In a way I prefer the old style rear, but (and I'm sad to admit this) the offset number-plates would really get my OCD going, so for peace of mind I'll get the new model when I win this week. The perfect weekend car.

I own a Morgan Aero SuperSports and won't be upgrading to this mess. What an awful backend. How can they go from what the Aero Coupe, SuperSports and Max had to this is completely beyond me. rolleyes

I would not be happy paying 80k and getting a dash like that.

Drop it by 20k and they are eating TVR's lunch

As it is they seem to have inherited some of Bristol's DNA and ability to do the quirky stuff.
Definitely up there for lottery purchase!

Love these things.

It is not as good looking as the Aero Supersports or the AeroMax.

But, for me, the good news is how I read that they have managed to make a bit more room inside by lowering the seat. They are normally a bit of a squeeze for a big /tall fellow.

I Agree dash is not good at all . and the carpet with red pipe on edge .. looks cheap for that price ...hell it looks better in £17 Fiats !
but would have to say styling of rear is growing on me ...seen the car in some different colours , colour choice seems to make it .
