Pretty lethal 6 months of the year and not possible to ride on motorway/dual carriageway so single carriageway which isn't unknown to have lots of potholes and idiot drivers who are unconsidered to cyclists.

You'd have to triple my salary to get me to drive 120 miles/day, and even then I'd think twice about accepting.

Basically any VW group car with a PD 130 TDI 1.9 engine will give 45-50 mpg all day long, and be bullet proof with a very addictive turn of speed.

120 miles a day, 20 days a month is nearly 29k miles a year. You must be mad to consider doing that at speed in a small car. You want a 1.9 TDI VW or Skoda at your budget at requirements. The bigger the better for comfort. Passat or Octavia would do. But when you can get something like this ... http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2015...

Really considering several hours a day in a stbox? Not for me, ta.

Its 60-80mins each way v UK average of 40-45mins.
You leave a touch earlier thus missing all local congestion missing what exactly?

Where did you do this commute out of interest?
I've been doing it M4/M3/M25 & M40 - you must have an auto that's paramount, comfortable drivers seat, Bluetooth, sat nav & of late I love having built in Wide screen DVD so when stationary in terrible traffic I could watch Scarface or in the night garden to my hearts content.

Who me ?

Lupo/Arosa Tdi's are surprisingly good on the motorway & A2 Tdi's too though the ride is awful in A2's. Other option is a Fabia with the 1.4Tdi which are found in later years.
I can vouch for the Fabia 1.4TDi. The 3 pot little 1422 is not bad on motorways, EXCEPT it could do with an extra gear or overdrive.I've found it will keep going right up till it peaks, but anything over 3k revs is a bit noisy and thirsty. Radio excellent, seats are a bit soft for my liking

Lupo 3L LHD 96mpg combined on W reg cars held world record round the world ave mpg of 125mpg ish.
Magnesium alloys, has an electric internal heater as the engine takes so long to get hot as its not wasting energy thermally. Great aero bike width tyres very Eco set up auto. A superb car.

I can vouch for the Lupo 3L, I own one smile Also massively tall geared <3k at 100mph, this was a recent trip to the Alps & yes that 4.1L = 68.8 mpg at "about that speed" it also has a stupidly massive range of over 1200km if you brim & vent the tank.

Dorset to Tignes on 33L of diesel ! it is epicly cheap to run.

Import a Lupo 3L or an A2 3L, so economical they're cool.

There's a Lupo 3L for sale here with a manual gearbox. Wonder what that's like.

You could easily have my Volvo S60 for that money!

Smooth 5 cylinder diesel that goes well, is very reliable and has the best seats and sound system of any car I've had. It seems made for motorway work really. The OBC states between 48 and 52 MPG on a run and it does genuinely seem quite economical.

I don't really need it any more unfortunately frown

If you wanted a vag 2.0tdi you could get a seat alteas seem to be the cheapest with this engine.

I've got a 50ml commute each way and was thinking of an alfa 159 or a gt for a while until I can afford a brera.
The gt looks fantastic is a 1.9 and gets 45-50 I hear
